Chapter 9 - A New Sun Over the Estate

Three weeks later, the Reyes estate looked entirely different.

The heavy, oppressive gloom that had hung over the property for twelve years had vanished, replaced by the sound of children laughing across the manicured lawns. The abandoned baseball diamond—once a silent museum to a forgotten future—was now flooded with afternoon sunlight, echoing with the sharp crack of a wooden bat hitting a baseball.

Luca Costello stood near home plate, no longer leaning on his heavy oak cane. His legs, though still slightly stiff and requiring rigorous daily physical therapy, supported his weight steadily without braces.

He tossed a red-stitched baseball up into the air, caught it in his glove, and grinned.

Ten feet away, Maya stood with a plastic bat gripped tightly in her small hands, her tongue sticking out of the corner of her mouth in that exact same sweet, intense concentration she used when solving math problems.

"Okay, watch the elbow!" Luca called out, tossing a gentle, underhand pitch toward the plate.

Maya swung with all her might. CRACK!

The ball sailed high into the air, flying past second base and rolling into the outfield grass. Maya dropped the bat and started running toward first base, laughing hysterically, her oversized coat flapping behind her like a superhero cape.

On the covered porch, Elena Harper sat in a wicker rocking chair, watching the scene unfold with a mug of hot coffee in her hands and a soft, genuine smile gracing her lips.

Arthur Callahan walked up the porch steps, carrying a fresh batch of chocolate chip cookies on a tray that he set down on the small side table. He leaned against the railing, watching Luca chase Maya across the grass like an overgrown kid.

"Never thought I'd see the day, Luca," Callahan murmured, taking a sip of his coffee. "You standing up, running bases, playing suburban dad after ruling the Chicago underworld with an iron fist."

"Empires are built on steel, Cal," Luca said, jogging back toward the porch with Maya riding triumphantly on his shoulders, her small hands clutching his hair like reins. "Families are built on grace."

He set Maya down gently on the grass. She immediately ran back toward her painted river rocks near the garden fence, leaving Luca and Elena alone on the sunlit lawn.

Luca walked over to the porch steps, sitting down beside Elena. He didn't use his cane. He simply lowered himself smoothly, testing his recovering muscles, and let out a long, contented breath as the autumn breeze swept across the lake.

Elena turned her head, looking at him with those quiet, steady eyes that had seen through his toughest armor from day one.

"You're walking better every day," she observed softly.

"I have a good coach," Luca replied, turning to meet her gaze. "She told me my legs weren't dead. They were just waiting for someone to remind them how to fight."

Elena smiled, reaching out to cover his calloused hand with hers. "We still have a lot of history to catch up on, Luca Costello."

"We have all the time in the world," Luca said, looking out past the baseball diamond toward the gap in the privet hedge where a little girl in an oversized coat had changed the universe.

The war was over. The crown was secure. And for the first time in twelve years, Luca Reyes was finally home.
