Chapter 5 - The Ledger of Betrayal

Within an hour, Elena was sitting across from Luca and Callahan in the hidden basement archives beneath the main estate. The room was lined with old metal filing cabinets and illuminated by a single overhead bulb that swung gently from a cord.
Callahan plugged Elena’s thumb drive into a ruggedized laptop, tapping away at the keyboard with practiced speed. Files scrolled down the screen in a blur of green text—financial transfers, offshore bank accounts, encrypted emails, and operational logs spanning over a decade.
"Let's see what our friend Marcus has been hiding," Callahan muttered, opening a folder labeled Legacy_Archives.
A scanned document popped up on the screen. It was a digital image of a physical ledger page dated twelve years ago—the exact month Luca had collapsed.
Luca leaned heavily on his oak cane, standing beside the table with his teeth clenched against the aching protest of his muscles, staring down at the screen.
The ledger bore Marcus Vance’s signature at the bottom, authorizing a high-level wire transfer to a biomedical shell company in Zurich. Next to the transaction was a handwritten note in Marcus’s precise, angular handwriting: Compound delivered. Patient stable in degenerative state. Syndicate consolidation proceeding as planned. V.V. co-signed.
"V.V.," Luca whispered, his voice shaking with cold fury. "Victoria Vance. Marcus’s sister. She administered the first dose during my routine physical checkup at the private clinic."
"And look at the financial trail," Callahan pointed out, clicking open another spreadsheet. "Marcus didn't just steal your legs, Luca. Over the last twelve years, he’s embezzled nearly forty million dollars from the syndicate’s offshore holdings, funneling it into real estate in the Caymans and a chain of front companies in Panama. If the captains see this, Marcus won't just be ousted—he’ll be a dead man walking among his own men."
Elena stood beside Luca, watching the glowing screen with wide eyes. "He planned the whole thing. Everything. Every execution, every turf war, every tragedy in this empire for twelve years—all built on a stolen throne."
Luca reached out, placing his heavy hand gently on Elena’s shoulder. "You risked everything tonight, Elena. If Marcus had caught you..."
"He wouldn't have caught me," Elena said quietly, turning to look up at him with eyes full of fierce resolve. "Because men like Marcus only look at people like me as furniture. They never expect the furniture to bite back."
Luca let out a low, gravelly chuckle—a sound that held more genuine warmth than anything he had uttered in a decade. He turned to Callahan. "Can we decrypt the communications log? I want to know who Marcus is currently selling our shipping routes to. If he’s planning a coup, he has external backers."

"Give me two hours," Callahan said, his fingers flying across the keyboard. "I’ll pull every encrypted message he’s sent this week."
"No," Luca said, straightening his posture as far as his recovering legs would allow. "We don't wait two hours. Marcus knows I stood up on the porch today. By morning, he’ll realize someone accessed his terminal. We move tonight."
