Chapter 1 - Shadows of the Estate

The mahogany door of the study clicked shut behind Elena Harper, leaving Luca Costello alone with the twin envelopes resting on his desk. The room was heavy with the scent of aged cedar, old paper, and the sterile undertone of medical reports that had just rewired his entire existence. For twelve years, Luca had operated as a phantom king. From his wheelchair, he had managed a syndicate that spanned the Midwest, directing ports, unions, and underground logistics with a chilling, dispassionate precision. He had accepted his fate because acceptance was the only armor left to a man whose legs had turned to lead on a rainy Tuesday twelve summers ago.
He picked up the toxicological report once more. The chemical signature was distinct, complex, and deliberately administered. It wasn’t a random street drug or a sudden stroke of pathology. It was a slow-acting neurotoxin, custom-engineered to degrade spinal signal conductivity while sparing autonomic functions, designed to make him look and feel like a broken man while keeping his mind clear enough to realize he was helpless.
Who had access to his morning espresso during those specific six months?
His mind flashed back to the inner circle of the Reyes empire. Back then, his second-in-command had been Marcus Vance—a man who had stood by his bedside in the hospital, weeping tears of fabricated grief, vowing to hunt down whoever had broken their boss. Marcus had seamlessly stepped into the power vacuum, consolidating his authority while Luca withdrew into the fortified isolation of the lake estate.
Luca rolled his wheelchair toward the French doors that led to the covered porch. Outside, the afternoon sun cast long golden beams across the lawn. In the distance, near the edge of the abandoned baseball diamond, a small figure in a coat two sizes too large was spinning in circles, her arms outstretched like a clumsy ballerina.
Maya. His daughter.
The realization didn’t feel real yet; it felt like a ghost story whispered by someone else. A child born of a summer he barely remembered, raised in poverty by a mother who had guarded her fiercely while working as a silent maid in his own fortress. And now, through a gap in the privet hedge, she had waltzed right past his armed guards, looked past his terrifying reputation, and noticed what twelve years of world-class neurologists had missed: his legs were sleeping, not dead.
A soft knock interrupted his thoughts. Marcus Vance entered without waiting for an invitation, his expensive Italian suit tailored to perfection, a predatory smile plastered across his sharp features.
"Boss," Marcus said, stepping into the study with the easy familiarity of a man who believed he owned the room. "The docks in sector four are acting up again. The union leaders are threatening a strike unless we bump their cut. Want me to handle it the old way?"
Luca slowly turned his wheelchair around, keeping his face an impassive mask of granite. For twelve years, he had looked at Marcus with trust. Now, every word, every gesture, every microscopic twitch of Marcus’s eyes was filtered through the lens of betrayal.
"Handle it quietly, Marcus," Luca said, his voice level and steady. "I don't want blood on the docks this week. We have bigger concerns."
Marcus raised an eyebrow, a flicker of suspicion crossing his eyes. "Bigger than the eastern shipping lanes? What could possibly rank higher than cash flow, Luca?"
"My health," Luca replied evenly, watching Marcus’s micro-expressions. "I’ve started a new physical therapy regimen. I’m thinking of standing up again, Marcus. How does that sound to you?"
For a fraction of a second, the color drained from Marcus’s face. His hand twitched near his lapel, resting dangerously close to the concealed holster under his jacket. But the mask returned just as fast, replaced by a smooth, patronizing smirk.

"Miracles are for church, boss," Marcus chuckled darkly. "You just focus on staying comfortable in that chair. We’ve all gotten used to how things work around here."
"Things change, Marcus," Luca whispered, his eyes locking onto his former friend with a cold, terrifying promise. "Everything changes."
