Chapter 9 - The Trial of the Past

The final legal hurdle was the custody agreement hearing in the Cook County Family Court.

The courtroom was quiet, smelling of old paper and polished mahogany. Judge Thomas, a stern-faced woman with decades of bench experience, adjusted her reading glasses as she reviewed the final psychiatric and financial evaluations submitted by both parties.

Jason sat beside me at the plaintiff's table. He wasn't wearing his usual armor of arrogance or expensive suits; he wore a simple charcoal blazer, his hands resting calmly on the table.

"Mr. Bennett," Judge Thomas said, her voice carrying across the silent room. "I have reviewed your petition for joint custody, as well as the independent psychological evaluations and the complete restructuring of your assets. You have voluntarily severed all financial ties with your mother's estate."

"Yes, Your Honor," Jason answered steadily. "My daughter’s safety and my family’s well-being are my only priorities."

"And Mrs. Bennett," the judge turned her gaze toward me. "Your position?"

I stood up, smoothing my skirt. "Your Honor, Jason has proven over the past ninety days that he is fully rehabilitated from the toxic control of his family. He is a devoted, attentive father to Lily. While our marital relationship is something we are taking one day at a time, I fully support joint legal and physical custody."

Judge Thomas nodded slowly, picking up her gavel.

"In my thirty years on the bench, I have rarely seen a family system so violently dismantled and so deliberately rebuilt from the ground up," she said. "Joint custody is granted. Supervised visitation for Diane Bennett is permanently denied pending federal sentencing."

Thunk.

The gavel fell, sealing a new chapter for all of us.
