Chapter 4 - The Safe Haven and the Knock at the Door

At Sarah’s apartment, Lily was finally playing with her building blocks, her cheek still faintly pink but her bright laughter filling the small living room.

I was sitting at the kitchen table reviewing a stack of employment agencies online. I had been a senior graphic designer before I married Jason and fell into the trap of becoming a stay-at-home mother in his family’s suffocating world. I needed a job. I needed an apartment. I needed my independence.

A sharp knock sounded at the front door.

Sarah froze, grabbing a heavy kitchen skillet out of the rack. "Stay behind me, Clara."

She pulled the door open.

Standing in the hallway wasn't a process server or a squad of police officers. It was Jason.

He looked entirely unraveled. His designer suit was wrinkled, his hair was messy, and the red marks from my hand were still faintly visible across his jawline. He looked at me with a desperate, broken expression that made my stomach twist—not with sympathy, but with cold contempt.

"Clara," he breathed, taking a step inside. "Please. Let me talk to you."

"Get out, Jason," I said, standing up and stepping between him and Lily. "You have nothing to say to me."

"I left the condo," Jason said quickly, holding up his hands in a defensive gesture. "I walked out on Mom. I told her I’m filing for divorce, and I’m taking my half of the corporate shares. Clara... I’m sorry. I froze. I was a coward. But I’m not living under her thumb anymore."

I looked at him for a long moment, taking in the trembling of his hands and the raw panic in his eyes.

"Jason, it’s too late," I said quietly. "You watched your mother strike our two-year-old child and you protected your plate of steak. You don't get a second chance at being a father after you failed the first and only real test of your life."

Before Jason could reply, a heavy thud echoed from the hallway outside.
