Chapter 5 - The Subpoena and the Serpent

The door swung wider, revealing not an intruder, but Diane’s high-priced attorney, Mr. Miller, flanked by two private security guards.
"Jason, there you are," Miller said smoothly, flashing a cold, predatory smile as he stepped into Sarah’s tiny apartment uninvited. "Your mother has authorized an immediate emergency injunction. Since you and Clara are still legally married, and you haven't filed formal separation papers, Jason holds equal parental rights. We are filing for immediate temporary custody of Lily."
Jason spun around, his eyes wide with horror. "Mom sent you here to do what?"
"Your mother is protecting the Bennett family legacy from an unstable environment," Miller replied coldly, gesturing to the security guards to step forward.
My blood ran cold. I scooped Lily up into my arms, backing toward the kitchen counter, my heart hammering against my ribs. "You touch my daughter and I swear to God I will end you all!"
"Clara, stop!" Jason shouted, stepping between the guards and me. He turned to Miller, his voice dropping into a dark, commanding register that I had never heard him use before in our entire marriage.
"Get out of this apartment, Miller," Jason snarled.
"Mr. Bennett, your mother's orders—"

"I am the majority voting shareholder of Bennett & Associates effective this morning," Jason interrupted, pulling a signed document from his suit pocket and shoving it into the lawyer's face. "I just fired you. If you or my mother come within five hundred feet of my wife and daughter again, I will personally see that every license you hold is revoked and every asset your firm manages is liquidated."
Miller stared at the paper, his arrogant expression melting into absolute shock. He looked at Jason, realized the spoiled heir had finally grown a spine, and backed toward the door without another word.
