Chapter 9 - The Final Boardroom

The executive boardroom on the 55th floor of Vaughn Enterprises was packed to capacity.

Every senior executive, regional director, and remaining board member sat around the massive mahogany table, their expressions tense and anxious. The fallout from Derek’s disgrace had left a vacuum of power, and rumors of a hostile restructuring had been swirling through financial circles for forty-eight hours.

The heavy double doors swung open.

I walked into the room wearing a sharp, tailored obsidian-black suit, my hair pulled back into a sleek, flawless ponytail. Behind me walked Evelyn Vaughn, her presence lending immediate, unquestionable authority to my arrival.

I didn't sit at the side or the foot of the table. I walked straight to the head of the table—the seat traditionally reserved for the supreme CEO and majority shareholder—and sat down with absolute, unshakeable poise.

Silence descended upon the room instantly.

"Good morning, everyone," I said, my voice carrying clearly across the expansive space.

A nervous-looking junior vice president raised his hand tentatively. "Mrs. Vaughn... with all due respect, we received unconfirmed reports regarding a massive shift in equity ownership. Can you clarify the current status of the board?"

I opened the manila envelope Julian Vance had given me the night before and slid several certified copies across the mahogany surface toward the senior directors.

"You don't need unconfirmed reports, gentlemen," I said smoothly. "You need facts."

As the directors scanned the documents, their faces drained of color one by one. The realization rippled through the room like wildfire: the Vaughn monopoly they had served for decades was no longer controlled by the Vaughn bloodline alone. It belonged entirely, legally, and irrevocably to me—and behind me stood the reinstated legacy of the Vance fortune.

"As of this morning," I continued, resting my hands flat on the table, "every executive who participated in corporate embezzlement, shell company fraud, or complicity in my ex-husband's embezzlement schemes has been stripped of their titles and handed over to federal prosecutors."

A murmur of panic erupted among a few remaining corrupt directors near the back. One of them stood up angrily, slamming his hands on the table.

"You can't just purge the entire board! The company will collapse without our experience!"

I looked up at him, my gaze as cold and sharp as broken glass.

"Experience in corruption isn't an asset, Mr. Miller. It’s a liability. And security is already escorting you out of the building."

Before Mr. Miller could protest further, two guards stepped into the boardroom, gently but firmly taking him by the arms and guiding him toward the exit. The remaining directors sat in stunned, terrified silence, realizing that questioning my authority was a fatal mistake.

Evelyn Vaughn leaned over, whispering softly into my ear with a proud, glittering smile in her eyes.

"Your grandfather would be proud, Maya. You didn't just win the game. You rewrote the board."
