Chapter 5 - The Unraveling of the Accomplice

While Derek was crashing against the concrete reality of his ruin, his partner in crime was facing an entirely different kind of collapse.

On the other side of the city, inside a cramped, dreary motel room smelling of stale cigarette smoke and bleach, Lena sat on the edge of a sagging mattress. One of the newborn twins was wailing furiously in a makeshift bassinet fashioned from a laundry basket, while the other slept fitfully beside her.

Her phone buzzed incessantly on the nightstand. She picked it up with trembling fingers, hoping against hope that Derek had managed to salvage something. Instead, the screen displayed a cascade of blistering notifications.

“Marketing Agency Inc. terminates contract with Lena Sterling effective immediately.” “Landlord serves 24-hour eviction notice for luxury penthouse suite.” “Social media accounts flagged for harassment and corporate sabotage; public backlash reaches critical mass.”

"No... no, this isn't happening," Lena muttered, tears of frustration streaming down her face. She dialed Derek’s number, but the automated carrier chime sounded immediately: “The subscriber you have dialed is no longer available.”

She threw the phone against the motel wall. It shattered into plastic pieces, the battery popping out and clattering across the linoleum floor.

The door to the motel room suddenly clicked open.

Lena gasped, scrambling backward on the mattress, thinking security or reporters had found her. But the figure standing in the doorway was neither.

It was Helen, her adoptive mother.

Helen looked older, her usually immaculate makeup smeared, her designer handbag clutched tightly in her white-knuckled grip. She closed the door behind her with a heavy click, locking the deadbolt.

"Mother," Lena breathed, a flicker of hope sparking in her chest. "Thank God. You have to help me. Derek’s lost everything, and Maya has frozen all our accounts—"

Before Lena could finish her sentence, Helen’s hand whipped through the air with terrifying speed.

SLAP!

The sharp crack echoed off the motel walls. Lena stumbled sideways, her cheek burning bright red, her hand flying to her face as she stared at her mother in utter shock.

"You stupid, arrogant little fool," Helen hissed, her voice shaking with rage. For the first time in her life, the mask of polite maternal support had completely vanished, revealing the desperate, calculating opportunist underneath. "All these years, I raised you, I molded you, I gave you access to high society so that you could secure a wealthy husband and lift our family out of mediocrity. And what did you do? You let a billionaire heiress play you like a fiddle!"

"It wasn't my fault!" Lena sobbed, clutching her cheek. "Derek promised me everything! He said Maya was weak! He said she wouldn't do anything!"

"Derek is a moron!" Helen screamed, pacing the narrow floor of the motel room. "And you are even worse for believing him! Do you have any idea what’s happening out there? Our house is being repossessed. My social circle has entirely excommunicated us. People are laughing at us on national television!"

"What are we going to do?" Lena cried, tears finally breaking through her anger as the wailing baby in the laundry basket grew louder.

Helen stopped pacing. She looked down at Lena with cold, calculating eyes—the same eyes that had taught Lena how to manipulate, scheme, and steal from the very beginning.

"We are going to find a way to survive," Helen whispered grimly. "And if that means crawling back to Maya and begging for mercy... then that is exactly what we will do."
