Chapter 7 - The Shadows of the Past

With the corporate restructuring complete and the parasites permanently removed from my sphere of influence, the media storm finally began to quiet down. Tabloids grew tired of running daily retrospectives on Derek Vaughn’s spectacular fall from grace, and the financial markets welcomed the new, transparent leadership at Vaughn Enterprises.

Yet, despite the peace, a lingering shadow remained.

Late one evening, long after the office towers had emptied out and the city lights twinkled like distant stars, I sat alone in the penthouse study reviewing confidential files from the old Vaughn family archives. Evelyn had mentioned once or twice that her grandfather—the patriarch who had built the empire in the mid-20th century—had left behind a private journal detailing the true origins of the family's wealth and the strict clauses that had ultimately saved me.

I unlocked a small, hidden wall safe behind a mahogany bookshelf. Inside lay a single, leather-bound journal with yellowed pages and cracked spine.

I opened it carefully, the paper brittle to the touch.

As I flipped through the handwritten entries dating back to 1952, something unexpected caught my eye. Tucked inside the back cover was an old, black-and-white photograph.

I pulled it out. It showed a young man resembling Derek standing beside a woman who bore an uncanny, terrifying resemblance to... my own mother.

My breath caught in my throat.

I quickly read the nearby journal entry, written in the shaky, aggressive cursive of Evelyn’s grandfather:

“The bloodline must be protected at all costs. The sins of the father flow through the sons, and only a woman of pure outside blood can break the cycle of destruction. If a Vaughn ever seeks to destroy his legal wife for the sake of another from within the same tainted tree, the crown must pass instantly to the innocent.”

A cold shiver ran down my spine. The clause wasn't just a corporate safeguard designed by a clever businessman. It was an ancient, generational curse—or perhaps an intentional trap—laid decades ago to catch precisely the kind of arrogant monster that Derek had turned out to be.

The intercom on my desk suddenly chimed, breaking the heavy silence of the room.

"Mrs. Vaughn," security’s voice crackled through the speaker. "You have a visitor in the lobby. He insists on seeing you. He says his name is Julian Vance."

I froze. Julian Vance.

The name sent a shockwave through my memory. Julian Vance wasn't just a random name; he was the former managing partner of the rival Vance Group, a man who had vanished from the corporate world twenty years ago under mysterious circumstances involving a hostile takeover attempt against the Vaughn family.

"Did he say what he wants?" I asked, my voice steady despite the sudden spike in my pulse.

"He says he knows the truth about why your father married your stepmother... and why your wedding was targeted from the very beginning."
