Chapter 4 - The Sound of a Locked Door

Ten minutes later, the private elevator chimed.
The heavy mahogany doors slid open, revealing Derek Vaughn. The immaculate, arrogant CEO from the wedding night was gone. In his place stood a broken, hollowed-out man. His designer ivory tuxedo was rumpled and stained with spilled coffee. His hair was disheveled, and dark, exhausted circles bruised the skin beneath his bloodshot eyes.
He stepped out of the elevator, taking tentative steps into the sprawling penthouse office. He looked around as if seeing the space for the first time, realizing that every painting, every piece of antique furniture, and every square inch of marble now belonged exclusively to the woman he had tried to discard.
"Maya," he breathed, his voice cracking pathetically. He took a step forward, raising his hands in a pleading gesture. "Maya, please. We need to talk. Just... give me five minutes."
I remained seated behind the large mahogany desk, my fingers steepled together. I didn't invite him to sit.
"You have three minutes, Derek," I said evenly. "My schedule today is booked with auditors and restructuring consultants, and unlike you, I take my responsibilities seriously."
Derek swallowed hard, his eyes welling with desperate tears. He fell to his knees halfway across the room, crawling toward the desk like a beaten dog.
"I was a fool," he sobbed, choking on his own words. "Lena... Lena manipulated me. She trapped me with the pregnancy, she whispered in my ear, she made me believe that... that you didn't care about me. It was all a trap! But I love you, Maya. You’re my wife—you were my wife!"
"For forty-two minutes," I reminded him calmly. "Technically, according to the state registry, our marriage was annulled the moment I signed the separation rider attached to the divorce decree. So let's not pretend we have a shared history worth saving."
"You can't do this to me!" Derek suddenly snapped, the desperation giving way to a flash of his old, ugly temper. He slammed his fist against the side of my desk. "I built this company! I spent ten years of my life expanding our market share! You can't just take everything I own because of some archaic family clause!"
"I didn't take it, Derek," I replied, my voice dropping to a dangerous, icy whisper. "You handed it to me. On a silver platter. In front of three hundred witnesses."
He stared at me, his chest heaving. "What do you want? Do you want money? Do you want me to crawl? I'll leave Lena. I'll throw her and the babies out on the street today. I'll do whatever you want! Just give me back my position at the board."
I stood up slowly, walking around the desk until I stood right above him. I looked down at the man who had once made me feel small, invisible, and disposable.
"Derek, do you know why I stayed with you for two years?" I asked softly.
He looked up, confused, his breath hitching. "Because... because you loved me?"
"Because my grandfather taught me that when an enemy is digging their own grave, you don't interrupt them," I said. "You bring them a shovel. You brought Lena into our home. You flaunted her. You thought your cruelty was a sign of your power. But every single humiliation you inflicted on me was just another signature on your own financial death warrant."
I turned my back on him and walked toward the window.
"Security," I spoke clearly into the intercom on my desk. "Escort Mr. Vaughn out of the building. And make sure he’s blacklisted from every corporate property bearing the Vaughn name."
"Maya! MAYA!" Derek screamed, scrambling to his feet and lunging toward me.
Before he could take two steps, the office doors burst open. Four burly security guards grabbed him by the arms and collar, hoisting him off his feet as he flailed and thrashed like a wild animal.
May you like
"Let me go! You can't do this! Maya, you bitch! You'll pay for this!" his voice echoed down the hallway as the elevator doors slid shut, cutting off his frantic cries.
The office fell silent once more. I exhaled a long, steady breath, feeling a profound weight lift from my shoulders. The past two years of calculated silence, silent tears, and secret investigations had finally culminated in absolute victory.
