Chapter 9 - The Promise Kept

Spring arrived with a sudden, violent explosion of color across the Rockford hills. The melting snow gave way to vibrant green grass, blooming wildflowers, and clear, sunlit skies.

The yellow room was filled with the sound of crawling laughter, rattling toys, and the sweet, melodic hum of Grace singing lullabies while preparing lunch in the kitchen.

Adrian sat at the wooden dining table, reviewing a final set of corporate restructuring documents that completely converted the remaining syndicate assets into legitimate, publicly traded logistics and real estate holding companies.

The criminal underworld was behind him. The blood debts had been paid in full.

The front door unlocked with a soft click, and Grace stepped into the entryway, carrying a basket of freshly washed laundry.

"Mail’s here," Grace announced, dropping a small stack of envelopes onto the table.

Adrian sorted through them—bills, circulars, and a legal confirmation from the state court finalizing the formal adoption and legal protection of Lily Hart-Vale.

He picked up the legal document, running his thumb over the official state seal.

"Everything in order?" Grace asked, pouring herself a cup of tea.

"It’s official," Adrian smiled, a genuine, radiant expression that had once been entirely foreign to his face. "She’s legally, indisputably mine."

"Yours and Evelyn's," Grace corrected gently.

Adrian looked down at the document, nodding slowly. "And Evelyn's."

From down the hallway, a high-pitched, joyful squeal echoed through the house. Little Lily had just pulled herself up onto her feet, gripping the edge of the living room coffee table for balance, taking her very first wobbly, triumphant step forward.

Emma cheered, clapping her hands wildly. "She walked! Mommy, she walked!"

Adrian stood up instantly, dropping the papers onto the table, and hurried down the hall.

Lily stood in the center of the sunlit room, her big brown eyes wide with wonder, balancing precariously on her tiny feet before taking one more brave step straight toward her father.

Adrian dropped to his knees, opening his arms wide.

Lily tumbled forward right into his embrace, giggling uncontrollably as Adrian lifted her high into the air, spinning her around under the golden light streaming through the window.
