Chapter 7 - The Downfall of the Council

Within forty-eight hours, the subterranean infrastructure of the Vale syndicate underwent a violent, bloodless purge.

With Marcus Reed captured and securely locked in the reinforced holding cells beneath the Rockford safehouse, Adrian utilized the full, terrifying weight of his loyal enforcers to dismantle the corrupt council members who had backed Marcus’s coup.

There were no long trials, no public negotiations. Syndicate justice was swift, absolute, and final.

By Tuesday morning, the regional bosses who had conspired against Evelyn’s family either fled the country or surrendered their assets to Adrian’s control. The betrayal was rooted out, burned away, and buried so deep it would never rise again.

Back at the Rockford safehouse, the rain had finally cleared, replaced by a brilliant autumn sun that flooded the yellow room with warm, golden light.

Adrian sat on the wooden floorboards, building a clumsy tower out of wooden blocks while eight-month-old Lily sat between his knees, clapping her tiny hands together every time the blocks tumbled down.

Grace stood by the doorway, holding a cup of coffee, watching the scene with a quiet, profound smile.

"The federal marshals picked up Marcus’s second-in-command an hour ago," Grace reported softly. "The Chicago police have officially closed the investigation into the service road ambush, ruling it an internal corporate dispute. As far as the public knows, Marcus Reed has fled to South America."

Adrian didn't look up from the blocks. He gently picked up Lily, resting her against his shoulder as she let out a happy gurgle.

"Let the public think what they want," Adrian replied, his voice calm and steady. "The past is dead. And we are finally safe."

Grace nodded, taking a sip of her coffee. "What about the mansion in Chicago? Are we going back?"

Adrian looked around the cozy, sunlit room, then down at his daughter, whose tiny hand was tangled securely in the fabric of his shirt.

"No," Adrian said definitively. "We stay here. Where the air is clean, where there are no gold-rimmed glasses or whispering politicians, and where no one will ever find us."
