Chapter 8 - The Ghost of Evelyn Hart

Three months later, the first heavy snows of winter blanketed the timberlands of Rockford, transforming the wooded estate into a pristine, silent wonderland.

The safehouse had been expanded, fortified with state-of-the-art security systems operated by men Adrian personally vetted and trusted with his life, but inside, it remained a warm, joyful family home.

Little Emma and Lily—now crawling everywhere and exploring every corner of the house—were inseparable. Grace had officially become part of the family, managing the household with a fierce, protective loyalty that matched Adrian’s own.

On a crisp Friday afternoon, Adrian walked out onto the wooden back porch, holding a steaming mug of black coffee.

The snow crunched softly under his boots as he stepped down into the yard, walking toward a small, private garden he had built near the edge of the treeline.

In the center of the garden stood a simple white marble headstone, sheltered beneath the branches of an old pine tree.

Evelyn Hart. A beautiful flower that survived winter.

Adrian knelt down in the soft snow, brushing a light dusting of white powder from the cold stone surface. He placed a single white carnation—the same flower from her memorial hall—at the base of the headstone.

"They're safe, Evelyn," Adrian whispered into the cold winter air, his voice thick with emotion. "Marcus is gone. The council is broken. And our little girl is growing up just like you—strong, beautiful, and surrounded by light."

He closed his eyes for a moment, feeling the familiar, phantom warmth of her hand resting against his cheek, reminding him of the promise he had made her.

“You don’t have to become harmless. But you do have to decide what kind of man Lily will see when she looks at you.”

He had decided. He was no longer just the feared syndicate boss of Chicago. He was a father.
