Chapter 6 - Shadows of the Past

The transition from a syndicate underworld dominated by fear to a restructured, transparent global enterprise was neither quick nor bloodless.

Over the next three months, Luca worked eighteen-hour days from his temporary headquarters in Tuscany. With Federico and Valentina locked away in maximum-security federal black sites awaiting permanent military tribunal hearings, the remaining regional council members fell entirely into line.

Every corrupt asset was seized. Every illegal human trafficking and narcotics pipeline operated by rogue factions was systematically dismantled and replaced with legitimate global logistics, shipping, and pharmaceutical supply networks.

Luca had decided that if the Moretti name was going to command respect, it would be through absolute strength and industrial dominance—not poison in the dark.

Yet, despite his sweeping success across Europe, a lingering threat remained hidden across the Atlantic.

One stormy afternoon, Marcus burst into Luca’s private study, slamming an encrypted intelligence dossier onto the mahogany desk.

"Boss, we have a breach in the North American network," Marcus reported, his face grim.

Luca didn't look up from his tactical review documents immediately. He finished signing a transfer authorization, set his fountain pen down, and raised his eyes. "Explain."

"Your father’s old rival in Chicago—The Callahan Syndicate—has been quietly buying up our American distribution channels," Marcus explained, flipping open the dossier to reveal satellite surveillance photos. "They think that because you spent twelve years paralyzed, the Moretti empire is weak in the West. They’re planning a hostile takeover of our New York shipping docks next Tuesday."

Luca leaned back in his leather chair, a slow, dangerous smile spreading across his face.

"They think I'm weak?" Luca chuckled softly, shaking his head. "They think because I spent a decade in a wheelchair, I forgot how to hunt?"

"What are your orders, Boss?" Marcus asked, his eyes gleaming with readiness.

"Book a private flight to New York tonight," Luca instructed, standing up and buttoning his jacket. "It’s time to remind America why they used to check under their beds for the Moretti name."
