Chapter 2 - The Confession of the Mad Scientist

The crystal chandeliers of the Moretti ballroom flickered as the sudden intake of breath from three hundred high-society elites echoed like a collective gasp.

Dr. Arthur Vance—the reclusive, brilliant geneticist who had vanished from the international medical community twelve years ago—collapsed against the marble pillar near the entrance. His lab coat was stained with dark fluid, his hair wild, his hands shaking violently as he pointed a trembling finger directly at Valentina Romano.

"You promised me the funding!" Dr. Vance shrieked, his voice cracking with a mixture of terror and unhinged hysteria. "You swore to me that the compound was only meant to be a temporary experimental restraint to keep him manageable while the corporate merger cleared! You never told me you were going to use it to paralyze him permanently for over a decade!"

Valentina’s face drained of every trace of color. The pristine, untouchable facade she had meticulously maintained for twelve years shattered completely.

"Shut up, you senile fool!" Valentina shrieked back, lunging forward with her manicured nails bared. "Guards! Remove this raving lunatic from the estate immediately! He’s an impostor!"

"Nobody move," a voice commanded.

It wasn't a shout. It didn't need to be.

Luca Moretti’s voice—deep, resonant, and dripping with an icy, lethal calm—cut through the chaos like a razor blade.

For twelve years, the syndicate had believed their leader was a broken man trapped in a rolling cage. But as Luca slowly placed both palms flat against the padded armrests of his wheelchair, every muscle in his back, shoulders, and arms locked into rigid, terrifying tension.

Slowly, deliberately, Luca applied pressure downward.

The heavy oak-and-steel frame of the wheelchair groaned in protest. His right leg, dormant for 4,380 days, twitched violently. Then his left.

With a low, controlled grunt that carried the weight of a decade of suppressed fury, Luca Moretti pushed himself upward.

The ballroom fell into an absolute, suffocating silence.

Guests stepped back in sheer horror and awe. Valentina froze mid-stride, her mouth opening and closing soundlessly as her eyes bulged in disbelief.

Luca stood.

He was slightly unsteady at first, his joints stiff from disuse, but his height—towering over six feet—cast a long, dark shadow across the polished marble floor. He was no longer the helpless invalid of the Moretti estate. He was the Mafia King, resurrected from a twelve-year chemical grave.

"Twelve years, Valentina," Luca whispered, taking one slow, deliberate step forward. The sound of his leather-soled shoe hitting the floor echoed like a gunshot. "Twelve years of you wiping my brow, whispering sweet lies into my ear, telling me how much you loved the broken man I had become."

Valentina stumbled backward, her designer heels clicking frantically against the floor until her spine slammed against the tiered wedding cake table.

"Luca... let me explain," she stammered, her hands trembling as she dropped the syringe. It shattered against the tile, splashing clear, viscous liquid across her shoes. "I did it for us! Your father left the syndicate vulnerable! If you hadn't been immobilized, the council would have torn you apart in the power struggle! I kept you safe!"

"You kept me paralyzed so my signature could be forged on every asset transfer document in Europe," Luca said, his voice dropping an octave as he closed the distance between them.

He stopped just inches from her. He didn't raise his fist. He didn't yell. He simply looked down at her with eyes so devoid of mercy that Valentina burst into ragged, hysterical sobs.

"Luca! Please! Remember the love—"

"There was never any love," Luca interrupted coldly. He turned his head slightly toward the entrance where Elena stood holding little Maya tightly against her chest. "There was only a monster wearing a beautiful face."

Luca raised his right hand, snapping his fingers twice.

From the shadows of the vaulted double doors, four massive, armed enforcers—men loyal exclusively to Luca’s inner blood oath—stepped forward, their silenced submachine guns raised.

"Take Valentina to the underground holding cells," Luca ordered, his voice echoing with absolute finality. "And bring Dr. Vance with her. We have a very long, very detailed medical debriefing to conduct."

As Valentina was dragged screaming across the ballroom floor, clawing desperately at the marble tiles, Luca turned his attention back toward the center of the room, where hundreds of wealthy guests, corrupt politicians, and treacherous business partners stood paralyzed with fear.

The true reckoning of the Moretti empire had only just begun.
