Chapter 4 - The Betrayal Unravelled

The metropolitan courthouse was surrounded by a sea of reporters, their cameras flashing like a wall of lightning as Marcus Thorne’s black Maybach pulled up to the curb.

Marcus stepped out, flanked by six towering security guards. He ignored the shouted questions, the microphones thrust in his face, and the chaotic noise of the crowd. He walked up the stone steps of the courthouse with the slow, deliberate stride of an executioner.

Inside the courtroom, the atmosphere was electric.

Victor Rossi, the patriarch of the Rossi family, sat at the defense table. He was a man in his late sixties, with a sharp, aristocratic face and a grooming so perfect it looked artificial. Next to him sat his daughter, Isabella.

Without her designer gowns and flawless makeup, Isabella looked disheveled. She wore a grey prison-issued jumpsuit, her hands cuffed to her waist. When she saw Marcus enter, a spark of hope lit up her eyes.

"Marcus!" she cried out, her voice echoing in the courtroom. "Marcus, tell them! Tell them it was a mistake! You know me, you know I would never—"

"Silence!" the bailiff barked.

Victor Rossi stood up, turning to face Marcus. He walked over, his expression a mix of arrogance and desperation.

"Marcus," Victor whispered, his voice low and threatening. "You are making a grave mistake. We have partners in high places. If you drag my daughter’s name through the mud, I will drag your company down with us. I have files, Marcus. Files on your father’s old transactions. If they become public, Thorne Enterprises will go under."

Marcus looked down at the older man, his expression completely vacant of any fear.

"Your 'partners' have already abandoned you, Victor," Marcus said quietly. "As we speak, the Federal Exchange Commission is raiding your corporate offices. Your offshore accounts have been frozen. And your stock... well, it’s currently trading at pennies. You are bankrupt."

Victor’s face turned a sickening shade of grey. He grabbed his chest, his eyes wide. "What... what did you do?"

"I did what you should have done years ago," Marcus said. "I protected my family."

The judge, a stern woman with a reputation for absolute fairness, entered the room, and everyone took their seats.

"We are here to determine bail for the defendant, Isabella Rossi," the judge announced, looking at the documents in front of her. "The charges are aggravated assault on a pregnant person, attempted feticide, and malicious mischief. How does the state plead?"

The prosecutor stood up. "Your Honor, the state requests that bail be denied entirely. The defendant is an extreme flight risk, given her family’s private aviation assets and foreign accounts. Furthermore, the crime was committed with premeditation and extreme cruelty against a vulnerable victim who is currently in a medically induced coma."

Harold Sterling, the expensive defense attorney Victor had hired, stood up. "Your Honor, this is a gross exaggeration! The victim, Mrs. Thorne, has a history of emotional instability. The confrontation was mutual, and the injuries were accidental. We have a witness—the event coordinator, Elaine Parker, who will testify that Mrs. Thorne was the aggressor."

Marcus’s eyes narrowed. He looked at the back of the courtroom.

There sat Elaine Parker, looking pale and terrified, her hands shaking as she clutched her purse. Two of Victor Rossi’s heavy-set security guards were sitting on either side of her, a clear, silent threat.

"Your Honor," the prosecutor said, "we would like to call Elaine Parker to the stand."

Elaine slowly walked to the stand, her knees visibly shaking. She took the oath, her voice barely a whisper.

"Miss Parker," Harold Sterling said, stepping forward with a patronizing smile. "Please tell the court what you saw in the VIP suite. Didn't you see Mrs. Thorne attack my client, Miss Rossi, first?"

Elaine looked at Isabella, who was glaring at her with a promise of death. Then she looked at Victor Rossi, who subtly tapped his gold ring against the wooden table. Finally, her eyes landed on Marcus.

Marcus didn't threaten her. He simply nodded, his eyes filled with a quiet, solid reassurance. Beside him, Arthur Vance stood with two federal marshals who had just entered the courtroom.

Elaine took a deep, shuddering breath. Tears filled her eyes.

"No," she said, her voice suddenly finding its strength. "No, that's a lie."

The courtroom erupted into whispers.

"Miss Parker!" Sterling warned, his voice hardening. "I remind you that you are under oath."

"I am under oath!" Elaine cried, her voice cracking with emotion. "And I won't lie for them anymore! Victor Rossi’s men threatened to ruin my business, to hurt my family if I didn't lie! But the truth is... Isabella Rossi cornered Khloe. She mocked her. She shoved her into the table. And then... she kicked her. She kicked a seven-month pregnant woman with her heel! It was the most horrible thing I’ve ever seen!"

"Liar! You lying bitch!" Isabella screamed, thrashing against her handcuffs as the bailiffs rushed to hold her down. "My father paid you! You were supposed to say what we told you!"

Victor Rossi closed his eyes, his head dropping into his hands.

"Order! Order in this court!" the judge slammed her gavel repeatedly. "The defendant will remain silent, or she will be removed!"

Once the room quieted down, the judge looked at Isabella with a mixture of disgust and absolute severity.

"Based on the testimony of the eyewitness, and the indisputable security camera footage provided by Saint Jude Hospital," the judge declared, "I find the defendant to be an extreme danger to society and a high flight risk. Bail is denied. The defendant will remain in maximum-security custody until her trial."

As the bailiffs unlocked Isabella’s chair to lead her away, she screamed Marcus’s name, her voice echoing off the walls like a banshee. But Marcus didn't look at her. He turned and walked out of the courtroom, his focus already shifting back to the only place that mattered.

The hospital.
