Chapter 2 - The Fight for Two Lives

The red light above the operating room doors glowed with an ominous, steady intensity.

Marcus sat on a cold plastic chair in the hallway, his head buried in his hands. The expensive white silk shirt beneath his tuxedo jacket was stained with his wife’s blood. Every time he closed his eyes, he heard the sickening sound of Isabella’s heel making contact with Khloe’s stomach. He felt a phantom pain in his own chest, a suffocating guilt that threatened to tear him apart.

I should have been there, he thought, his knuckles turning white as he gripped his hair. I knew Isabella was dangerous. I knew she was obsessed. I should never have left Khloe alone, not even for a minute.

Arthur Vance stood near the elevators, speaking in low, urgent tones into his phone. His face was pale, but his eyes were sharp. When he hung up, he walked over to Marcus and placed a heavy hand on his shoulder.

"The police have Isabella in custody at the precinct," Arthur said. "Because of the severity of the victim's condition and the video evidence, the magistrate denied her immediate bail. She is sitting in a holding cell."

"She needs to sit in a prison cell for the rest of her life," Marcus growled, his voice hollow and dead.

"She will," Arthur promised. "But right now, we have a bigger fight. Victor Rossi has already hired three different crisis management firms. They are trying to suppress the security footage. They are claiming the hospital cameras were hacked, that the video is a deepfake created by your company to sabotage their stock price before the merger."

Marcus let out a bitter, cold laugh. "Let them try. I will buy every media outlet in this state before I let them bury this."

Before Arthur could reply, the heavy double doors of the operating room swung open. Dr. Sarah Jenkins, the lead obstetrician, stepped out. Her surgical gown was splattered with blood, and her face was lined with deep exhaustion.

Marcus scrambled to his feet, nearly stumbling. "Dr. Jenkins... how is she? How is my baby?"

Dr. Jenkins sighed, removing her mask. "The physical trauma to Khloe’s abdomen caused a severe placental abruption. She was bleeding internally, Marcus. We had no choice but to perform an emergency vertical Cesarean section to save both of them."

"Is she..." Marcus's voice hitched. "Is she alive?"

"Khloe is stable, but she lost a critical amount of blood. We’ve placed her in a medically induced coma to allow her body to recover from the shock and the trauma to her spine. The impact against the marble table caused a minor fracture in her lumbar vertebrae, but we expect her to make a recovery with intensive physical therapy."

"And the baby?" Arthur asked, his voice trembling with the protective instinct of a grandfather.

Dr. Jenkins looked at Marcus, her eyes soft with sympathy. "Your son was born at just thirty weeks. He weighs barely three pounds. His lungs are extremely underdeveloped, and he suffered oxygen deprivation during the attack. He is currently in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) on a high-frequency ventilator. The next seventy-two hours are absolutely critical, Marcus. He is fighting for his life."

A son.

Marcus had a son. But instead of holding his newborn baby in his arms, sharing a tearful, joyful smile with his beautiful wife, his son was hooked up to machines, fighting to breathe because of the senseless cruelty of a jealous socialite.

"Can I see him?" Marcus whispered.

"Only through the glass of the incubator, and only for a few minutes," Dr. Jenkins said. "He needs absolute quiet. Any stress could cause his fragile blood vessels to rupture."

Marcus nodded slowly, his heart breaking into a thousand pieces. He turned to Arthur. "Stay with Khloe. Don't let anyone near her room. I don't care if it's the governor himself—no one gets in without your personal approval."

"You have my word, Marcus," Arthur said, his eyes flashing with determination.

As Marcus walked down the long, sterile corridor toward the NICU, his phone began to vibrate in his pocket. He pulled it out. The screen showed an incoming call from his mother, Eleanor Thorne.

Marcus answered it, his voice colder than the winter wind. "Mother."

"Marcus, thank goodness!" Eleanor’s voice came through the speaker, frantic and high-pitched. "What on earth is going on? I’m at the gala, and the police just dragged Isabella out of the VIP elevator in handcuffs! People are talking, Marcus! The press is swarming the lobby! Do you have any idea what this scandal will do to our family’s stock? You need to call the police chief and get this resolved quietly. Isabella is a Rossi! We need their alliance!"

Marcus stopped in his tracks, staring at his reflection in the glass window of the corridor.

"My wife is in a coma, Mother," Marcus said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. "My son is on life support, fighting to take his next breath because your precious Isabella kicked her in the stomach. And you are worried about the stock price?"

There was a sudden, sharp silence on the other end of the line.

"Oh... oh, my," Eleanor whispered, her voice faltering. "I... I didn't know it was that serious. But Marcus, surely it was an accident? Isabella is high-spirited, yes, but she would never—"

"If you speak her name to me again," Marcus interrupted, his voice dropping to a deadly whisper, "I will strip you of your board seat, freeze your trust accounts, and banish you from this family permanently. Do not test me, Mother. I am no longer playing your political games."

He hung up the phone, not waiting for a response. He stepped into the NICU, the steady, rhythmic beeping of the incubators filling his ears. He walked over to the incubator labeled Baby Boy Thorne.

Inside, lying on a tiny mattress, was a baby so small he could fit in the palm of Marcus's hand. He was covered in wires, a tube taped to his tiny mouth, his chest rising and falling rapidly under the mechanical breaths of the ventilator.

Marcus pressed his hand against the warm glass of the incubator.

"I am so sorry, my boy," Marcus whispered, a single tear slipping down his cheek. "I will protect you. And I will make them pay. Every single one of them."
