Chapter 8 - The Arraignment of the Century

The federal courthouse steps on a crisp Thursday morning were a swirling vortex of media vans, flashing camera bulbs, and reporters shouting over one another.

"Mr. Blackwood! Is the family empire officially bankrupt?" "Mrs. Thorne-Blackwood, do you have any statement regarding the attempted poisoning charges?" "Does the federal government intend to seize Bellefleur Manor?"

The flashbulbs blinded the morning light as Evelyn, Julian, and Grant were led up the courthouse steps in bright orange federal detention jumpsuits, their hands cuffed behind their backs, surrounded by heavily armed U.S. Marshals.

Gone were the custom Italian suits, the twenty-thousand-dollar designer gowns, and the arrogant smirks of untouchable privilege. They looked small, exhausted, and utterly defeated by the crushing weight of federal justice.

Evelyn kept her head stubbornly lowered, shielding her face from the cameras as she pushed past the wall of reporters. Julian stumbled over his own ankle-chains, nearly face-planting onto the concrete before a marshal yanked him upright. Grant didn't even look up at the sky; his eyes were glued to the ground, terrified of the public humiliation that had stripped away every vestige of his family's fabricated legacy.

From the safety of a secure viewing gallery inside the courtroom, I watched the live broadcast monitors alongside Special Agent Marcus Thorne.

The federal prosecutor wasted no time. As the heavy mahogany doors of Courtroom 301 closed behind the defendants, the Honorable Judge Thomas Vance—no relation, but a jurist known for his absolute intolerance of corporate corruption—hammered his gavel once.

"The court is now in session," Judge Vance announced, his voice booming through the chambers. "United States versus Evelyn Thorne-Blackwood, Julian Blackwood, and Grant Blackwood. The charges include federal racketeering, financial fraud, obstruction of justice, and premeditated attempted murder. How do the defendants plead?"

Standing between two federal public defenders who looked thoroughly overwhelmed, Evelyn raised her chin just a fraction, her voice trembling slightly but retaining a shred of her old aristocratic defiance.

"Not guilty, Your Honor."

"Enter pleas of not guilty for all three defendants," Judge Vance ordered, his pen scratching across the docket sheet with ominous finality. "Given the severity of the RICO charges, the absolute mountain of digital and forensic evidence presented by Special Agent Thorne, and clear flight risk indicators, bail is denied across the board. Defendants are remanded to federal custody pending trial."

The gavel came down a second time.

Clack.

The sound echoed through the courtroom, sealing the fate of the dynasty that had terrorized and manipulated high society for decades.

Marcus turned off the live monitor remote, looked at me, and offered a quiet, respectful nod.

"It's over, Elena," he said softly. "They'll never bother you again."
