Chapter 5 - The Federal Raid

While Special Agent Marcus Thorne secured the primary suspects inside the ballroom, the outer perimeter of Bellefleur Manor erupted into coordinated tactical movement.

Heavy federal black-and-white vans and unmarked tactical units flooded the manicured gravel driveways, their tactical lights strobing against the white-columned facade. Federal agents equipped with encrypted warrant packages didn't just lock down the venue—they moved simultaneously across three different zip codes.

At the Blackwood Corporate Headquarters downtown, federal auditors breached the executive suites, seizing physical servers, hidden hard drives, and offshore banking ledgers before corporate lawyers could remotely wipe the data.

At the main Blackwood ancestral estate on the north shore, another tactical team executed a search warrant on Evelyn’s private study, uncovering a hidden wall safe containing medical override files, forged physician signatures, and a logbook tracking years of suppressed health incidents involving anyone who dared challenge the family's absolute dominance.

Back in the ballroom, Marcus had finished cuffing Julian, leaving him kneeling beside a weeping, broken Chloe.

My breathing had stabilized entirely. The aggressive surge of the glucose gel, combined with an intravenous saline drip administered by the emergency medics who had just rushed past the security blockade, had brought my heart rate and blood sugar back into safe territory.

I sat up slowly, leaning against the cushioned bench the medics had set up near the buffet.

Marcus walked over, holding out a sealed evidence bag containing my rescued insulin pump, which had been retrieved from the trash bin, wiped down, and sanitized by the forensic team.

"Here," Marcus said softly, his authoritative persona dropping just enough to reveal a genuine human concern. "Your equipment. It’s clean, functional, and logged into evidence properly. Though you’ll need a new infusion set before you plug it back in—we have spares in the medical kit."

I took the small black device from his hand, my fingers tracing its familiar contours. For the first time all day, the heavy, suffocating pressure in my chest lifted.

"Thank you, Agent Thorne," I murmured, looking up at him. "How did you... why were you even working the catering staff at a high-society event like this?"

Marcus gave a faint, almost imperceptible smile. "Federal Bureau of Investigation, White Collar and Special Operations Division. We’ve been tracking an illicit pharmaceutical diversion ring moving through private high-society clinics in this district for six months. Bellefleur Manor was flagged as a primary distribution hub. I was embedded in the catering crew to map the staff contacts when I saw what she did to you."

"Destiny has a funny way of timing things," I whispered.

Before Marcus could answer, Evelyn—who had remained eerily silent while her empire collapsed around her—suddenly let out a sharp, chilling laugh.

She stood tall between two federal marshals, her designer dress stained with a drop of wine, her eyes burning with an unholy fire as she stared straight at me.

"You think you've won, don't you, Elena?" Evelyn sneered, her voice echoing off the crystal chandeliers. "You think a badge and a few handcuffs destroy what the Blackwood family has built over a century? We own the banks, the judges, and the senators. By morning, we’ll be out on bail, and you’ll still be a nobody with a dying pancreas begging for scraps."

Marcus didn't blink. He simply reached into his jacket pocket, pulled out an extra set of federal arrest warrants, and slapped them onto the podium.

"Actually, Mrs. Thorne-Blackwood," Marcus said, his voice ringing with absolute finality. "Those federal judges you think you own? They just signed a total asset freeze on every domestic and international Blackwood account. Your bail options are officially zero. And your empire is already history."
