Chapter 6 - Julian’s Total Collapse

The illusion of untouchable power shattered completely when the financial asset freeze hit the Blackwood family’s private holdings.
Within twenty minutes of the federal announcement, the frantic buzzing of smartphones filled the ballroom—not from guests taking photos anymore, but from panicked corporate board members, terrified investors, and high-profile legal counsels cutting ties with the disgraced dynasty before the contagion hit their own portfolios.
Julian watched his phone screen light up with non-stop emergency notifications from the corporate bank: Account frozen. Transaction denied. Margin call triggered.
"No, no, no—this is a mistake!" Julian screamed, lunging forward toward Marcus before the federal marshals easily pinned him back against the marble pillar. "Our primary liquidity is tied up in municipal bonds! You can't freeze operational capital without a court order from the state supreme court!"
"We didn't use a state court order, Mr. Blackwood," Marcus replied coolly, clipping his pen back into his pocket. "We used a federal RICO indictment. Racketeering, corporate fraud, and conspiracy to commit targeted bodily harm. Your family’s entire financial ecosystem has been classified as a criminal enterprise."
Chloe stared at her husband in absolute disbelief. The man she had married less than an hour ago under an arch of imported lilies wasn't just a heartless social climber; he was a financial criminal whose entire life was built on a foundation of sand.
"You didn't love me," Chloe whispered, her voice hollow, devoid of tears now. "The wedding... the merger... it was all just another corporate acquisition to secure mother's offshore funds."
Julian didn't look at her. He couldn't. His eyes were glued to his dead phone screen, his breathing shallow and erratic as the full weight of his impending forty-year federal prison sentence crashed down upon him.
Grant, realizing that his own name appeared multiple times in the corporate email logs Marcus had projected onto the screen, tried to quietly slip backward toward the service exit behind the kitchen doors.
"Going somewhere, Mr. Grant Blackwood?" Marcus's voice cut across the room like a sniper round.
Grant froze with his hand resting on the brass door handle. He slowly turned around, forcing a weak, pathetic grin. "I... I was just going to fetch some fresh air. My constitution isn't quite built for... all this excitement."
"Your constitution is about to be tested in a federal holding cell," Marcus said, motioning to two agents. "Detain him. Accessory after the fact, destruction of digital evidence, and failure to report a felony."
As Grant was grabbed by the arms and shoved against the wall, his expensive silver cufflinks clattered onto the polished marble floor. He didn't fight back. The arrogance that had defined the Blackwood brothers since birth had completely dissolved into sniveling cowardice.
Evelyn watched her two sons get handcuffed and led out through the grand double doors of Bellefleur Manor. For the first time, the fierce matriarch looked her true age—fragile, defeated, and utterly hollowed out by her own unrelenting cruelty.
The federal marshals flanked her sides, lifting her gently but firmly by the elbows.
"Move it, Mrs. Thorne-Blackwood," the lead marshal commanded.
As they walked past me, Evelyn stopped for a fraction of a second. She didn't look at Marcus, or the cameras, or the stunned crowd of guests. She looked directly into my eyes.
There was no apology. There was only a cold, bitter resignation.
"You may have the room today, Elena," Evelyn muttered under her breath as she was guided past. "But cold blood always runs in families. You haven't seen the last of what money can buy."
May you like
"Maybe," I replied steadily, my hand resting safely over my operational insulin pump. "But truth doesn't have a price tag."
She was escorted out into the flashing lights of the federal convoy, leaving the grand ballroom of Bellefleur Manor in a profound, deafening silence.
