Chapter 4 - The Sister’s Betrayal

Evelyn didn't look at the tablet. Instead, her eyes narrowed into venomous slits as she glared past Marcus and locked onto her newly minted daughter-in-law sitting sobbing by the altar.

"Useless, spineless girl," Evelyn hissed, her voice vibrating with pure malice. "If you had kept your sister under control like you promised, none of this pathetic theater would be happening."

Chloe jerked her head up, her face streaked with tears and smeared makeup. The twenty-thousand-dollar facade was completely shattered.

"I tried!" Chloe screamed, her voice cracking across the silent ballroom, startling several guests. "I told you she was sick! I told you her numbers were dropping hours ago! But you said the wedding photos mattered more! You said if she caused a scene, you'd pull the funding for Julian's corporate promotion!"

Julian flinched, turning sharply toward his wife. "Chloe, shut your trap right now—"

"No, Julian! I won't!" Chloe stood up, shaking violently, her veil falling backward onto the floor. She pointed a trembling finger at her mother-in-law and her husband. "You both knew! Every time Elena tried to get medical help, you called her dramatic. You blackmailed me into keeping quiet about her diabetes because you were terrified the Blackwood family would think our bloodline wasn't 'prestigious enough' for your precious pedigree!"

A murmur rippled through the three hundred high-society guests. Cell phones were hastily hidden, but the damage was done; the pristine, untouchable reputation of the Blackwood dynasty was unravelling in real time.

Marcus stepped between them, his tablet recording the audio exchange seamlessly.

"Fascinating," Marcus noted, turning his gaze to Julian. "So the groom was aware of systematic medical neglect and extortion of a civilian prior to the ceremony. That elevates this from an isolated incident to a coordinated household conspiracy."

"She’s lying!" Julian shouted, taking a step forward before a federal marshal gently but firmly pressed a hand against his chest, stopping him dead in his tracks. "She’s hysterical! It's post-wedding stress!"

"Is it?" Marcus raised an eyebrow. With a few taps on his tablet, he cast the local secure server data onto the massive projection screen normally reserved for the couple's wedding montage.

Instead of romantic engagement photos, the screen flashed bright red with a downloaded email thread.

Subject: Confidential Review - Vance Medical Liability & Asset Management. Sender: Julian Blackwood. Recipient: Evelyn Thorne-Blackwood. Body: "Ensure her medical supplies are 'misplaced' during the reception staging. If her health fails before the trust merger papers are signed next Tuesday, her inheritance reverts automatically to the estate per the pre-nuptial clause."

The color drained entirely from Julian's face. He opened his mouth, but no sound came out. The algorithmic web of corporate greed and calculated cruelty was laid bare for every wealthy guest, investor, and business partner to witness.

Chloe stared at her husband, horror dawning in her eyes. "You... you planned it with her? You wanted her dead?"

May you like

"It was just legal restructuring, Chloe!" Julian stammered frantically, his composure completely evaporating. "It’s standard corporate portfolio protection!"

"It’s first-degree conspiracy to commit murder," Marcus corrected smoothly, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his tactical belt. He stepped directly in front of Julian. "Turn around and place your hands behind your back."
