Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Empire

The downfall of the Whitlock family was swift and absolute.
By the next afternoon, the news media was saturated with the story of the massive smuggling and murder conspiracy. Richard Whitlock and Claire were arrested live on television, dragged out of their corporate offices in handcuffs, their faces covered to avoid the flashing cameras of the press. The forged loan papers they had used to trap Hannah were officially declared fraudulent by the courts.
Back at the hospital, the dark clouds finally began to clear.
Hannah lay in bed, her arm wrapped around a tiny, beautiful bundle wrapped in a pink blanket. The baby girl had been born via a safe, controlled delivery just as the sun rose over the bay. She was small, but she was healthy, her tiny fingers already gripping the edge of the blanket with a fierce strength.
The door opened quietly, and Caleb stepped inside. The reunion between brother and sister was filled with tears, a long, silent embrace that washed away months of terror and grief.
"I thought I lost you, Caleb," Hannah sobbed, holding his hand tight.
"Daniel saved me, Hannah," Caleb said, looking toward the doorway where Daniel stood quietly, watching them. "His men found the warehouse just in time. He never stopped looking for me from the moment you entered his house."
Caleb stepped out to give them privacy, leaving Daniel alone with Hannah and the newborn child.
Daniel walked slowly over to the bedside, his usual hard expression entirely gone. He looked down at the tiny baby girl, his eyes softening in a way that seemed almost impossible for a man of his background.
"She looks like Aaron," Daniel whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "She has his eyes."

"She has the Carver strength too," Hannah said softly, looking up at him. "Daniel... what happens now? The Whitlocks are gone, the debt is cleared. I don't have to be a maid anymore."
Daniel knelt beside the bed, taking her hand in his. "You were never just a maid to me, Hannah. From the moment you walked into my house, you were the bravest woman I had ever met. I want you to stay. Not as an employee. As the mother of my brother's legacy, and... if you’ll have me, as the woman I spend the rest of my life protecting."
