Chapter 2 - The Secret in the Cradle

The private wing of the Carver Medical Center was locked down within minutes of their arrival. Armed men in dark suits stood at every exit, their expressions grim under the bright fluorescent lights.
Inside the delivery room, the atmosphere was thick with tension. Hannah lay on the bed, her face pale and glistening with sweat, while Dr. Harrison checked the monitors. The baby's heart rate was spiking with every contraction, a direct result of the trauma she had endured in the ballroom.
Daniel stood by the window, his arms crossed, staring out at the rain-slicked streets of the city. When the doctor stepped away from the bed, Daniel intercepted him.
"How is she?" Daniel demanded, his voice low.
"The stress brought on premature labor, Daniel," Dr. Harrison sighed, wiping his brow. "She’s seven months along. We can try to stop the labor with medication, but if her blood pressure doesn't drop, we’ll have to perform an emergency C-section. She needs calm. She needs security."
Daniel walked back to the bedside and took Hannah’s hand. Her fingers were cold, but her grip was surprisingly tight.
"Daniel," she whispered, her voice weak. "Why are you doing this? Why do you care so much about Aaron's child?"
Daniel looked down at her, his jaw clenching. He looked at the jagged cut near her temple where Claire's ring had torn her skin. A profound sorrow filled his eyes, a look that no one on the waterfront had ever seen on the face of Daniel Carver.
"Because it isn't Aaron's child, Hannah," Daniel said softly.
Hannah stared at him, her breathing hitching. "What... what are you talking about? Aaron and I—"
"Aaron was my younger half-brother," Daniel interrupted quietly. "My father had a relationship outside his marriage thirty years ago. Aaron never knew the truth—our father kept him hidden to protect him from the family business. He wanted Aaron to have a clean, normal life. But I knew. I watched over him from a distance his entire life."
Hannah's jaw dropped, the shock momentarily making her forget the pain in her abdomen. "Aaron... was a Carver?"
"Yes," Daniel said, his thumb gently smoothing over the back of her hand. "When he died, I knew it wasn't an accident. I knew the Whitlocks were behind it because Aaron had started asking questions about their shipping manifests at the harbor. I let you come into my mansion because it was the only place I could keep you and my brother's child safe while I looked for the people who murdered him. I didn't want you to know the truth until I had cleared the danger. But tonight... I let my guard down."

Before Hannah could process the revelation, the door to the delivery room burst open. Martin Hale entered, his face pale and out of breath.
"Mr. Carver, we have a problem," Martin said quickly. "The Whitlocks have just released an official statement to the police. They’ve brought forward a forged ledger claiming that Hannah's brother, Caleb Monroe, embezzled three million dollars from their shipping accounts before he disappeared. They are calling Hannah an accomplice and have officers headed here with an arrest warrant."
