Chapter 1 - The Weight of Protection

The ballroom of the Carver mansion felt as though it had been plunged into sub-zero temperatures. Daniel’s charcoal jacket hung heavy and warm over Hannah’s shoulders, smelling faintly of expensive tobacco and rain.
Claire Whitlock stood entirely frozen, her manicured fingers still shaped as though they held the shears. Her gaze darted from the fallen strand of hair to Daniel’s face, searching for the familiar, calculating look of a man who usually weighed every action against the profit margins of the Providence docks. She found nothing but an icy, unyielding wall.
"Daniel, you are overreacting," Claire said, her voice dropping to a low, hissed whisper intended only for his ears, though the absolute silence of the forty guests made it carry. "She is a maid. A maid whose dead husband owed my family thousands of dollars. I am simply establishing the boundaries of this household before the wedding."
"There will be no wedding," Daniel said.
The words did not explode; they dropped like lead weights onto the marble floor.
A collective, sharp intake of breath rippled through the crowd. A union boss near the buffet line lowered his plate; a prominent city judge adjusted his glasses, his eyes widening.
"What did you just say?" Claire’s voice cracked, the high-society veneer instantly fracturing.
Daniel didn't answer her. He kept his arm wrapped securely around Hannah’s waist, absorbing her tremors as another sharp contraction caused her to lean heavily against his side. He looked down at her, his usual terrifying intensity melting into a fierce, protective focus. "Martin!" he called out.
Martin Hale appeared from the shadows of the service door instantly, his face grim. "Sir."
"Bring the car around to the private side entrance. Call Dr. Harrison and tell him we are arriving at the medical center in ten minutes. No delays."
"Right away, Mr. Carver," Martin said, casting a quick, reassuring glance at Hannah before vanishing.
"Daniel, you cannot do this!" Claire stepped forward, her hand reaching out to grab his sleeve, but one look from Daniel made her hand drop back to her side. "You need the Whitlock shipping lines! Your father’s legacy depends on the merger next month! You’re going to throw away everything we’ve built for an ungrateful, pregnant thief?"
Daniel finally turned his head to look at her, his dark eyes empty of any human warmth. "You think you know what my father built, Claire? You think you know what I own? You know nothing. Leave this house. If I see you or any member of the Whitlock family on my property after tonight, I will consider it an act of war."
Without waiting for her response, Daniel swept Hannah up into his arms. The guests parted like the Red Sea, lowering their faces as the undisputed king of the Providence waterfront carried a bleeding, trembling maid out of his own engagement party.

As they reached the private exit, Hannah looked up through blurred vision, her hand gripping Daniel’s shirt. "The baby..." she gasped, a wave of pain washing over her. "Daniel... it’s too early... Aaron’s baby..."
Daniel pressed his forehead against hers as he carried her into the waiting vehicle. "Hold on, Hannah. Just hold on to me. I've got you."
