Chapter 8 - Night at Pier 14

The docks at Pier 14 were choked in a thick, eerie fog rolling off Lake Michigan. The dark water lapped violently against the slime-covered wooden pilings, casting long, dancing shadows across the rows of rusty shipping containers.

Inside the main warehouse at the end of the pier, Julian Moretti stood near a wooden desk, nervously jamming stacks of hundred-dollar bills and offshore bearer bonds into a heavy leather duffel bag. Outside, ten heavily armed mercenaries patrolled the perimeter, their rifles ready.

"Is the yacht prepared?" Julian barked at his second-in-command, a large man named Marco.

"Engine is idling, Boss," Marco replied, checking his watch. "We depart in five minutes. The coast guard patrol won't be in this sector for another hour."

Suddenly, the heavy metal doors of the warehouse rattled loudly.

A black delivery van—the one registered to Thomas the butler—pulled up to the main security gate outside.

"Hold on," Marco said, looking at the security monitors. "It's Thomas’s vehicle."

Julian frowned, walking toward the window. "What is that idiot doing here? He was supposed to stay at the estate!"

The van’s driver-side door opened. A figure dressed in a rain poncho stepped out, holding a white folder up toward the security cameras.

"Open the gate," Julian ordered into his radio, curiosity overcoming his caution. "Let's see what information he brought."

The heavy iron gate rolled open. The mercenaries approached the van, their weapons lowered slightly, expecting their paid informant.

That was their fatal mistake.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

From the dark waters beneath the pier, six black-clad tactical operators exploded upward through the wooden floorboards of the warehouse, led by Dante and Leo. Silent, suppressed gunfire eliminated the interior guards before they could even draw their weapons.

Simultaneously, the rear doors of the black van burst open. Brielle and three Vance tactical soldiers spilled out, taking down the perimeter guards in a synchronized, flawless breach.

Chaos erupted inside the warehouse.

"It's a trap!" Marco screamed, pulling his weapon, but Dante dropped him with two shots to the chest before he could aim.

Julian dropped his duffel bag, his eyes wide with utter terror as he realized his entire perimeter had been erased in less than thirty seconds. He scrambled toward the back exit leading directly to the private yacht dock.

He burst through the side door onto the wooden walkway, the cold lake rain blasting into his face. He sprinted frantically toward the gangplank of his luxury yacht.

"Running away again, Julian?" a voice called out through the fog.

Julian spun around, drawing a compact revolver from his coat pocket.

Standing at the end of the narrow wooden pier, cutting off his path to the boat, was Brielle Dawson. She stood tall in the rain, dressed in black tactical gear, her Sig Sauer held steady in a two-handed grip, pointed dead center at his chest.

Julian panted heavily, rain streaming down his silver hair. He looked at the woman he had dismissed as a pathetic waitress, realizing that she was the architect of his total ruin.

"You..." Julian spat, his face twisting into a hideous sneer. "You pathetic little nobody! You destroyed my empire!"

"You destroyed yourself the moment you threatened a child," Brielle said, her voice calm, clear, and cold as ice.

Julian’s eyes flashed with mad desperation. He raised his revolver to shoot her.

BANG!

Brielle pulled the trigger without a fraction of a second's hesitation.

Her bullet struck Julian directly through the right hand, shattering his wrist and blowing the revolver out of his grip into the dark water below. Julian screamed in agony, sinking to his knees on the wet wooden boards, clutching his shattered hand to his chest.

Footsteps echoed heavily down the pier.

Dante stepped out of the fog, his gun drawn, coming to stand directly beside Brielle. He looked down at the pathetic, groveling man on the floor, then looked at Brielle, his eyes shining with immense pride and love.

Dante stepped forward, kicking Julian’s duffel bag into the water, where millions of dollars in corrupt money sank to the bottom of the lake.

Sirens began to wail in the distance—dozens of federal law enforcement vehicles and coast guard cutters closing in on Pier 14, their blue and red lights painting the fog in dazzling colors.

"It's over, Julian," Dante said softly, looking down at his defeated enemy. "You spend the rest of your life in a federal cage."

Brielle lowered her weapon, letting out a long, slow breath as the adrenaline finally ebbed from her body. She felt Dante’s strong arm wrap around her waist, pulling her flush against his side as the rain washed away the blood, the fear, and the shadows of the past forever.
