Chapter 5 - The Snake in the Garden

For three days, the city of Chicago descended into an invisible, terrifying underworld war. Explosions rocked abandoned industrial lots in the dead of night, shipping containers were seized at the docks, and sirens echoed across the South Side continuously.
Through it all, the Vance estate remained a fortress.
Brielle spent her days helping Elena around the house, playing with Lily, and continuing her tactical training with Leo whenever Dante was away commanding his forces. She had grown deeply attached to the family. Elena treated her like a daughter, and little Lily followed her around like a shadow, refusing to sleep at night unless Brielle read her a bedtime story.
For the first time in eleven years, Brielle felt something she thought she had lost forever: a sense of belonging. A family.
It was a rainy Thursday evening when the quiet routine was shattered.
Dante was out meeting with the city's harbor master to secure the eastern shipping lanes. The mansion was quiet, the heavy rain beating rhythmically against the tall stained-glass windows.
Brielle was sitting in the grand library, reviewing map routes of the city, when she heard a quiet, frantic conversation echoing from the hallway outside.
She stood up, walking toward the cracked door, keeping her footsteps silent.
Outside, in the dimly lit corridor, stood Thomas—the estate’s head butler, a man who had served the Vance family for over fifteen years. He was whispering agitatedly into a burner cell phone, his back turned to the door.
"I told you, I can't get the girl out tonight!" Thomas hissed into the receiver, his voice trembling with stress. "Dante left extra guards on the second floor! If I disable the security grid on the east wing, Leo will notice within five minutes!"
Brielle felt her heart freeze in her chest. Cold ice rushed through her veins.
"Yes... yes, I know Mr. Moretti is impatient!" Thomas continued whispering frantically. "Tell him I will leave the garden side gate unlatched at midnight. The girl always walks in the glass conservatory before bed. You can grab her there without tripping the perimeter alarms. Just make sure my offshore account is credited with the remaining balance!"
Thomas hung up the phone, taking a shaky breath as he wiped sweat from his forehead. He tucked the burner phone into his jacket pocket and turned around to leave.
He stopped dead in his tracks.
Brielle stood three feet away from him in the doorway, her face pale, her dark eyes filled with absolute, cold disgust. In her right hand, raised and aimed dead center at his chest, was the Sig Sauer pistol Dante had given her.
"B-Brielle..." Thomas stammered, his face turning paper-white. He raised his trembling hands. "It's... it's not what you think—"
"You sold us out," Brielle said, her voice dropping into a terrifyingly steady register. "Elena trusted you. Dante paid you a fortune. You've been feeding Moretti information about this house."
"You don't understand!" Thomas cried softly, taking a panicked step backward. "Moretti has my son! He was going to kill him if I didn't help them! Please, Brielle... put the gun down... we can work this out!"
Thomas suddenly lunged forward, reaching for the barrel of the gun to overpower her.
Brielle didn't panic. She didn't freeze like she had eleven years ago in that dark apartment.
She shifted her body weight, stepped to the side, and swung the butt of the heavy steel pistol directly across Thomas’s jaw. The impact cracked sharply through the quiet hallway. Thomas let out a muffled groan and crashed hard onto the Persian rug, unconscious, a smear of blood oozing from his mouth.
Brielle stood over him, breathing heavily, the gun still gripped firmly in her hand.
She didn't call the house guards immediately. Her mind was racing, calculating the threat with a cold precision she didn't know she possessed.
Moretti’s men were coming at midnight through the garden gate, expecting a quiet snatch-and-grab operation. They thought they were hunting a helpless waitress trapped in a golden cage.
Brielle pulled the burner phone from Thomas’s pocket, checking the last incoming text message:
[[Gate unlatched at 00:00. Bring five men. Eliminate the waitress on site, bring the child.]]
Brielle looked at the clock on the library wall. It was 11:42 PM.
Dante was twenty minutes away across town. The house guards were stationed on the outer perimeter, unaware of the internal breach.

Brielle picked up the house radio comms, pressing the emergency channel.
"Leo," Brielle spoke clearly, her voice echoing into the security room. "This is Brielle. Secure Mrs. Vance and Lily in the panic room immediately. We have a mole inside... and we have company coming through the garden."
