Chapter 9 - THE PROPOSAL UNDER THE OAKS

Spring arrived in Westchester with an explosion of cherry blossoms, bright green grass, and warm afternoon sunlight.

The grand courtyard of the Vale estate was decorated with white ribbons, floral archways, and rows of elegant white chairs. But this was not a high-society media circus. There were no cameras, no billionaire syndicate leaders, no politicians buying favors.

There were only twenty people present—close friends, Saint Jude's hospital nurses who had helped Maya through her pregnancy, Marko, and the children.

Behind the estate, under a massive four-hundred-year-old oak tree that overlooked the shimmering lake, Sebastian stood waiting.

He wore a custom navy-blue tuxedo, looking impeccably handsome, his gray eyes focused entirely on the path leading down from the house. Standing beside him as his best man was Marko, dressed in a sharp gray suit, looking unusually proud.

In front of the altar stood three tiny figures.

Noah and Owen wore matching mini-tuxedos with little black bow ties, holding small satin pillows carrying the wedding rings. Beside them stood Ivy, wearing a fluffy white lace dress, holding a basket of yellow rose petals that she was enthusiastically throwing at everyone’s shoes.

The music began to play—a soft, acoustic cello melody echoing through the warm spring breeze.

Sebastian’s heart slammed against his ribs as he saw her.

Maya walked down the grassy aisle, holding a bouquet of white peonies and lavender. Her wedding dress was elegant, simple, and breathtaking—a floor-length lace gown that fit her perfectly, with an open back and a flowing train that brushed over the green grass. Her hair was styled in soft waves, adorned with tiny white flowers.

She looked like a dream—a dream Sebastian had spent four long, dark years believing he had destroyed forever.

As she reached the altar, Sebastian stepped forward, taking her hands in his. His fingers were shaking slightly, his gray eyes bright with unshed tears.

"You are so beautiful," he whispered, his voice trembling.

"You look pretty good yourself, Mr. Vale," Maya whispered back, a radiant smile illuminating her face.

The officiant—a retired judge who had helped clear Sebastian’s legal records—stepped forward, opening his book.

"Friends and family," the judge began, his voice warm and resonant. "We are gathered here today to witness not just a marriage, but a miracle of reconciliation, resilience, and unyielding love."

When it came time for the vows, Sebastian didn't pull out a written paper. He looked directly into Maya’s eyes, holding both of her hands tight.

"Maya," Sebastian said, his voice deep and steady. "Four years ago, I thought love was a liability. I was taught that to protect the people you love, you had to push them away and become cold. I was wrong. Love wasn't my weakness, Maya—it was the only thing that could save me. You gave me three beautiful children while fighting the world alone. You endured the darkest shadows of my past, and yet, you still had enough light in your heart to forgive me."

Tears streamed down Maya’s cheeks, catching the golden sunlight.

"I promise to spend every day of my life protecting you, honoring you, and loving you," Sebastian continued. "I promise to be a father our children can be proud of, and a husband worthy of your heart. I am yours, Maya. Entirely, forever, yours."

Maya squeezed his hands, her voice soft but filled with unbreakable conviction. "Sebastian, four years ago, my heart was broken into a million pieces. But every day since you came back into our lives, you have picked up those pieces and put them back together. You gave up everything you knew to build a safe world for our babies. You showed me that real strength isn't power or money—it's the courage to choose love over fear."

"Noah, Owen, the rings please," the judge smiled down at the two little boys.

Noah and Owen proudly marched up, holding out the satin pillows. Sebastian took the delicate, diamond-encrusted platinum band and slipped it onto Maya’s finger. Maya took a matching solid platinum band and slipped it onto Sebastian’s finger.

"By the authority vested in me," the judge announced, "I now pronounce you husband and wife. Sebastian, you may kiss your bride!"

May you like

Sebastian pulled Maya into his arms, lifting her slightly off her feet, and kissed her with a passion that made the small crowd erupt into cheers and applause.

Noah, Owen, and Ivy squealed with delight, running up to wrap their arms around their parents' legs. Sebastian dropped to one knee, pulling Maya down with him, gathering all three children into a massive family hug right there at the foot of the altar.
