Chapter 8 - SHADOWS OF THE PAST

Three months later, winter had settled over Upstate New York, covering the rolling hills of the Vale estate in a thick blanket of pristine white snow.

The estate had transformed completely. The heavy security guards in black tactical gear were gone, replaced by a discreet, high-end private residential security team. The dark, gloomy interior of the mansion had been painted in warm, inviting tones, filled with children's toys, small wooden chairs, and the constant, chaotic sound of laughter.

Sebastian sat in his newly renovated home office, reviewing papers. But they weren't syndicate ledgers or hit contracts. They were legal documents establishing the Vale Foundation for Single Mothers and Children—a charitable organisation funded by his family's restructured wealth, designed to help women in situations just like Maya’s.

A quiet knock came at his door.

"Come in," Sebastian said, setting his fountain pen down.

Maya stepped into the room holding two mugs of hot chocolate topped with marshmallows. She was wearing a cozy oversized blue sweater and leggings, her hair falling naturally around her shoulders. She looked radiant, her health fully restored, the pain of the past completely replaced by a soft, quiet peace.

"The kids are down for their nap," Maya said, setting a mug on his desk and taking a seat across from him. "Owen tried to convince me that marshmallows count as lunch."

Sebastian laughed, taking a sip of the chocolate. "He gets his stubbornness from you."

"Excuse me?" Maya teased, raising an eyebrow. "He gets his stubbornness from the man who brought twenty lawyers to court yesterday to finalize the foundation papers."

Sebastian’s expression softened into deep warmth. "I just want to make sure it's done right, Maya. That money caused so much suffering. It should finally do some good."

Maya looked at him, her eyes tracing the lines of his face. Over the past three months, she had watched Sebastian transform. He was no longer the feared "Billionaire Mafia Boss" of Manhattan whispers. He was a man who woke up at six in the morning to make pancake batter shaped like Mickey Mouse, a man who spent hours on his knees on the carpet building Lego castles, a man who held her late at night when the nightmares of the shooting still crept into her sleep.

"You've been working hard, Sebastian," Maya said softly.

"I have a lot of lost time to make up for," he replied, taking her hand across the desk. "Four years, Maya. I missed their first steps. I missed their first words."

"They call you Daddy now, you know," Maya whispered.

Sebastian’s hand tightened around hers, his gray eyes shining with sudden emotion. "I know. Every time Noah says it, I feel like my heart is going to explode."

Suddenly, the encrypted phone on Sebastian’s desk—the single private line he had kept from his old life—began to buzz.

Sebastian’s smile faded slightly. He answered it, placing it on speaker so Maya could hear.

"Sebastian," Marko’s voice came through. "It's done."

"What happened?"

"Victoria Vale’s transport arrived at the private sanctuary island in the South Pacific," Marko reported. "She has been settled into the estate. The island communications are fully isolated. She has no access to news, internet, or financial networks. She is entirely cut off from the world."

Sebastian took a deep breath. "And Viktor Vance?"

"Viktor accepted a plea bargain," Marko said. "He pled guilty to federal racketeering and conspiracy charges. He was sentenced this morning to twenty-five years at ADX Florence. He won't ever see the light of day again."

Sebastian looked over at Maya. She sat quietly, holding her mug, listening to the final chapters of their dark past being closed forever.

"Thank you, Marko," Sebastian said. "You can close out the files. I don't need that phone anymore."

"Understood, Boss... I mean, Mr. Vale," Marko corrected himself with a smile in his voice. "Take care of your family."

Sebastian hung up the phone, picked it up, and tossed it into the small desk safe, locking it shut. He looked at Maya and smiled.

"The ghosts are gone, Maya," Sebastian said softly. "All of them."

Maya stood up from her chair, walked around the desk, and sat down directly in his lap. Sebastian wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest, burying his face in the warm crook of her neck.

"I loved you four years ago, Sebastian," Maya whispered, her fingers running through his dark hair. "Even when I hated you, I loved you. But I love the man you are today so much more."

May you like

Sebastian pulled back, looking into her warm brown eyes, his voice trembling with emotion. "I will spend the rest of my life making sure you never regret giving me a second chance, Maya."

He leaned in, his lips meeting hers in a deep, tender kiss that erased every remaining shadow of their past.
