Chapter 1 - THE TOWER OF SECRETS

The cold November wind whipped across Bethesda Terrace, carrying with it the sharp bite of impending winter, but the freeze inside Sebastian Vale’s chest had nothing to do with the weather.
"Where do you live, Maya?" Sebastian repeated, his voice dropping into that quiet, terrifying frequency that made hardened mob bosses in the five boroughs fall silent.
Maya didn’t flinch. Four years of raising triplets on a nurse’s assistant salary in a cramped Queens apartment had burned away the shy girl who used to blush whenever he kissed her collarbone in the dark. She stood tall, her faded coat buttoned up to her throat, her body an unbreakable barrier between the most dangerous man in New York and the three little souls in the stroller.
"I live in a world where you don't exist, Sebastian," Maya said, her voice steady enough to slice through the roaring beat of his pulse. "And I intend to keep it that way."
"Sebastian!" Clarissa Hart snapped, taking a sharp step forward, her expensive Italian leather boots clicking against the damp stone. Her eyes were fixed on the boy in the middle—Noah—whose gray eyes remained locked on Sebastian with a solemn, ancient curiosity. "You cannot be serious. Look at her! Look at this scene! She's a nobody from nowhere trying to extort you right before the merger with my father's firm! This is a setup!"
"Clarissa," Sebastian said without turning his head. His eyes were glued to Maya's pale, exhausted face. "Get in the car. Go back to the estate."
"I am your fiancée!" Clarissa shrieked, her high-society composure entirely shattered. "The Hart family holds forty percent of the shipping lines your syndicate needs to secure the northern docks! You walk away from me right now for this... this charity case, and my father will crush your empire!"
Sebastian finally looked at Clarissa. The gray in his eyes wasn't just a color; it was a promise of violence. "If your father tries to touch a single asset of the Vale Syndicate, I will burn his fleet to the waterline before dinner. Get. In. The. Car."
Clarissa gasped, turning red with fury, but the absolute coldness in Sebastian's gaze terrified her. She turned on her heel and stormed up the stone steps toward Fifth Avenue, her phone already pressed to her ear as she called her father.
Sebastian turned back to Maya, but in those few seconds of distraction, she had already wheeled the double-wide stroller around and was rushing toward the pedestrian exit near 72nd Street.
"Maya, stop!"
He sprinted after her. His long stride closed the distance in seconds. He didn't grab her arm this time—he knew better than to physically touch her—instead, he stepped directly into her path, his massive, broad frame blocking the narrow paved walkway.
"Get out of my way, Sebastian," Maya panted, her knuckles white on the leather stroller grip. "Don't do this here. Don't make a scene in front of my children."
"Our children," Sebastian corrected, the word heavy and jagged in his throat. Our children. The phrase felt foreign, sacred, and agonizingly painful. "Four years, Maya. You let me believe I left you with nothing. You let me believe I was alone."
"You chose to be alone!" Maya shouted, her composure finally cracking. A tear broke free, trailing down her wind-chapped cheek. "You looked me in the eyes at the courthouse and told me I was a mistake you took too long to correct! Do you remember those words, Sebastian? Because I heard them every single night while I worked twelve-hour shifts at Saint Jude’s hospital with swollen feet and three babies kicking my ribs!"
"I said that to save your life!" Sebastian roared, the confession erupting from him before he could stop it.
The park seemed to go deathly silent.
Maya froze. The triplets, sensing the volcanic tension, went quiet. Little Ivy clutched her stuffed rabbit closer, while Owen reached out to pat his mother’s leg.
"What did you say?" Maya whispered.
Sebastian stepped closer, his shadow falling over her. "The Volkov syndicate had put a price on your head. My grandfather, Arthur Vale, brought photos to my desk. Photos of you buying groceries, photos of you opening your apartment door. They knew you were my weakness, Maya. The only way to take the crosshairs off your back was to strip you of my name, strip you of my protection, and make the underworld believe I didn't give a damn about you."
Maya stared at him, her lips parted in disbelief. For a second, a flicker of the old love—the tenderness that had once bound them in that tiny bed in Brooklyn—shone in her eyes. But then, as quickly as it came, her expression hardened into pure iron.
"Nice story, Sebastian," she said softly, her tone dripping with venom. "A tragic, noble mafia prince falling on his sword to protect the poor girl. It almost makes me forgive you. Except for one thing."
"What?"
"If you were protecting me from the Volkovs, why did your grandfather's head of security, Viktor Vance, stand in the marble lobby of Vale Tower when I was five months pregnant, hand me an envelope of ten thousand dollars, and tell me that if I ever tried to contact you again, you would have my babies taken by child protective services and locked away where I’d never see them?"
Sebastian felt as if a heavy iron blade had been driven through his spine. "What did you just say?"
"I brought the ultrasound, Sebastian!" Maya cried out, tears now streaming down her face freely. "Three little heartbeats! I begged him to just show you! I told him I didn't want your money, I didn't want the Vale fortune, I just wanted my husband to know he was going to be a father! And Viktor looked me in the eye and said, 'Mr. Vale received your letters. He considers this pregnancy an inconvenient liability. Take the cash and disappear, or we will take the children the day they are born.'"
Sebastian’s blood ran cold. The world went black at the edges.
Viktor Vance. His grandfather’s most trusted enforcer. The man who managed the Vale family’s private intelligence, security, and internal affairs.
"I never saw those letters," Sebastian whispered, his voice trembling with a terrifying rage. "I never saw an ultrasound. I was told you moved to Europe. My grandfather told me you took a settlement and left the country."
"Lie to yourself all you want, Sebastian," Maya said, pushing the stroller hard against his hips. He was so stunned he stepped aside automatically. "Your family is a den of snakes. You belong with them. Leave us alone."
She hurried down the path, hailing a yellow cab that was sitting at the curb. With practiced, exhausted speed, she unbuckled Noah, Ivy, and Owen, loaded them into the backseat, folded the bulky stroller with one hand, crammed it into the trunk, and slammed the door.
Sebastian stood on the curb, his hands fists at his sides, as the yellow cab merged into the dense Fifth Avenue traffic.
He didn't chase the cab. He didn't need to. His private intelligence network could track a shadow through a pitch-black room.
Instead, Sebastian pulled out his phone. His fingers were steady, but his eyes were blazing with a demonic fury that hadn't been seen since the great syndicate wars of five years ago.
He dialed a number.
"Boss?" answered Marko, his chief of security and the only man in New York he truly trusted.
"Marko," Sebastian said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "I want Viktor Vance locked in the subterranean holding room beneath the Brooklyn docks. Strip him of his comms, his weapons, and his dignity."
There was a brief pause on the line. "Viktor? Boss, he’s been your grandfather’s right hand for thirty years—"
"I don't care if he's the Pope," Sebastian growled. "Bring him to the docks. And Marko?"
"Yes, Boss?"
"Find out where Maya Bennett is staying. Send four team units to guard her building. Nobody goes in, nobody goes out without my personal authorization. If a single hair on her head or on the heads of my three children is touched, I will personally burn this city to the ground."
May you like
"Children?" Marko's voice gasped. "Boss... you have children?"
"I have triplets," Sebastian said, looking down at the damp leaves where the stroller had been standing moments before. "And I am about to tear my own family apart to get them back."
