Chapter 5 - Justice in the Spotlight

The trial of Thomas and Jason Morrison was dubbed the trial of the decade. The courtroom was packed to maximum capacity, with millions of viewers tuning in to the live-streamed proceedings online.
Sarah sat in the witness stand, her belly prominent, her eyes locked onto her father and brother. She wore a simple dark dress, her posture elegant and poised—a stark contrast to the haggard, desperate men sitting at the defense table.
The prosecution played the staircase recording for the jury. Hearing the raw, echoing sound of Sarah’s scream followed by Thomas's cold laughter sent a visible wave of revulsion through the jury box.
Next came the testimony of Dr. Sterling, who had taken a plea deal to avoid a life sentence. He confessed on the stand to falsifying Helena Morrison's autopsy report under threats of financial ruin from Thomas.
The defense attorney tried desperately to paint Sarah as an unstable woman who had staged the entire event for financial gain, but his arguments fell completely flat in the face of the overwhelming forensic and digital evidence.
"Your Honor," the prosecutor concluded in his closing statement, "the defendants built a fortress of wealth and influence on a foundation of murder, deceit, and systematic abuse. They believed their status made them untouchable. But the truth cannot be buried forever."
After only two hours of deliberation, the jury returned with a verdict.
