Chapter 4 - The Secrets in the Safe
With Thomas and Jason behind bars awaiting trial, Daniel and a team of forensic accountants representing Sarah began the painstaking process of uncovering the full extent of the Morrison family's corruption.
Because the federal court had appointed Sarah as the temporary administrator of the Morrison estate due to her status as the only remaining legal heir, she and Daniel were finally granted access to Thomas’s private office.
"Are you sure you're up for this?" Daniel asked gently, holding the door open for Sarah, who was now walking slowly with the help of a cane.
"I need to do this, Daniel," Sarah said, her voice stronger than it had been in years. "For my mother. She didn't die of a sudden illness like they told everyone. I know she didn't."
They approached the massive digital safe hidden behind a painting in the study. Using a master override code provided by the federal investigators, Daniel opened the heavy steel door. Inside were rows of ledger books, USB drives, and a thick manila folder labeled Helena.
Sarah’s breath hitched as she opened the folder. Inside were medical reports from twelve years ago—the year her mother died.
"Daniel, look at this," Sarah whispered, pointing to a toxicology report. "My mother didn't die of a stroke. The report shows lethal levels of a prescription sedative in her system. But the official death certificate was altered. It was signed by Dr. Sterling—the same doctor on the hospital board my father mentioned on the recording!"
"They murdered her," Daniel said, his chest tightening with horror. "Your mother discovered they were stealing from the trust, and they poisoned her to keep her quiet, using their medical connections to cover it up."

Attached to the report was a hand-written note from Thomas to Jason, dated the week of Helena's death: 'The problem is solved. Make sure the girl is kept isolated. If she starts asking questions, we use the psychiatric route.'
"This is the smoking gun," Daniel said, his voice filled with a grim satisfaction. "They aren't just going to prison for pushing you down the stairs, Sarah. They are going to prison for the rest of their lives."
