Chapter 5 - The Vigil

Days turned into weeks, and the initial firestorm of the scandal began to settle into a steady, burning embers of public fascination. The Rossi family empire had collapsed overnight. Isabella Rossi’s bail had been denied due to her flight risk, and she sat in a maximum-security remand center, awaiting a trial that would undoubtedly end in a lengthy prison sentence. Victor Rossi's assets had been frozen, and Rossi Pharmaceuticals was forced into liquidation.

The Thorne Group had suffered a massive blow, but under the careful, ruthless restructuring led by Dr. Arthur Vance’s legal team, the medical division was absorbed into the Vance Foundation, protecting the jobs of thousands of innocent hospital workers while stripping Richard Thorne of all his power. Richard was forced into early, disgraced retirement, exiled to a small estate in Europe, ignored by the very society that had once worshiped him.

But none of this mattered to Marcus.

For three weeks, Marcus had not left the private ICU room at St. Jude’s. He had set up a small cot in the corner, but he rarely used it. He showered in the staff locker room and ate whatever the nurses brought him. His stubble had grown into a thick beard, and his eyes were hollowed out by exhaustion.

His life was measured by the rhythmic, steady beep of two machines.

To his left was the incubator housing his son, whom he had named Leo, after Khloe's grandfather. Leo was tiny, hooked up to a maze of tubes and monitors, but he was a fighter. Every day, his lungs grew stronger, and his tiny hands would weakly grasp Marcus’s pinky finger whenever he was allowed to reach inside the sterile plastic dome.

To his right was Khloe.

She lay perfectly still, her face pale but peaceful, a ventilator doing the work of breathing for her. Her hand was warm, but it remained limp in Marcus's grip.

Dr. Vance walked into the room, carrying two cups of coffee. He handed one to Marcus, who took it with a muttered word of thanks.

"You need to sleep, Marcus," Arthur said gently, his initial hostility toward the young billionaire having softened over the weeks of witnessing his absolute, unwavering devotion to Khloe. "You're running on fumes. If Khloe wakes up and sees you looking like a ghost, she'll think she's died and gone to the underworld."

"I can't leave her, Arthur," Marcus whispered, his voice hoarse. "Every time I close my eyes, I see her on that floor. I see that red dress. I feel like if I look away, even for a second, she'll slip away entirely."

Arthur sighed, leaning against the IV pole. "The neurologists ran another EEG this morning. Her brain activity is stable. She’s not deteriorating, Marcus. But she’s... she’s resting. Her body went through immense trauma. Sometimes, the mind just needs time to heal before it’s ready to face the world again."

Marcus looked down at Khloe’s hand, rubbing his thumb gently over her knuckles. "I spent so long trying to be the perfect billionaire, Arthur. I thought protecting the Thorne name, building the empire, and managing the board was what defined me. But looking at her... looking at Leo... I realized I was just a coward hiding behind a title. I let people like Isabella into our lives because I was too afraid to stand up to my father. I let them hurt the only person who actually loved me for just being Marcus."

He squeezed her hand, a tear finally escaping his eye and landing on her pale skin. "I just want her to wake up. I don't care about the company. I don't care about the money. I just want my family back."

Suddenly, Marcus felt a microscopic twitch.

He froze, his breath catching in his throat. He stared down at their joined hands.

"Arthur..." Marcus whispered, his voice trembling. "Did you see that?"

"See what?" Arthur asked, stepping closer.

"Her hand. I think she just squeezed my finger."

Arthur immediately moved to the other side of the bed, checking the monitors. "Her heart rate is elevating slightly. Brain activity is spiking." He leaned over his niece. "Khloe? Khloe, sweetheart, can you hear me? If you can hear me, try to squeeze my hand."

For a long, agonizing ten seconds, nothing happened. The silence in the room was deafening.

Then, slowly, deliberately, Khloe’s fingers curled around Marcus's hand.

A soft, ragged groan escaped her lips. Her eyelids fluttered, fighting against the heavy weight of her deep sleep, before slowly opening to reveal the beautiful, familiar hazel eyes that Marcus had feared he would never see again.
