Chapter 4 - The Public Reckoning

The grand ballroom of the St. Jude's Charity Gala was a sea of glittering diamonds, flowing champagne, and false smiles. Victor Rossi, a man of immense stature with silver hair and a perpetual sneer of superiority, stood at the center of a circle of local politicians and investors, holding a crystal glass of whiskey.

Beside him stood Richard Thorne, who looked increasingly pale, sweat glistening on his forehead despite the cool air conditioning.

"Where is my daughter, Richard?" Victor asked, his eyes narrowing as he took a sip of his drink. "She went up to the VIP suite over an hour ago to check on your daughter-in-law, and she hasn't returned. And why are your security guards blocking the elevators to the upper floors?"

"Just a minor medical precaution, Victor," Richard lied smoothly, though his hands were trembling so violently he had to put his glass down on a passing waiter's tray. "Khloe had some minor complications. Nothing to worry about. I'm sure Isabella is just offering her support."

Suddenly, the ambient classical music playing through the ballroom's state-of-the-art sound system cut out.

The chatter in the room slowly died down as the massive, high-definition projector screens on the stage—originally meant to display charity donation milestones—flickered to life.

Instead of the Thorne Group logo, a black screen appeared with a single line of text: THE TRUTH BEHIND THE GALA.

"What is the meaning of this?" Victor Rossi demanded, turning to Richard. "Is this some kind of surprise presentation?"

"I... I don't know," Richard stammered, his eyes wide with horror.

The screen suddenly split into two. On the left side, a security camera feed began to play. The timestamp was from exactly one hour ago. The setting was the VIP recovery suite.

The crowd gasped as the video showed Isabella Rossi, dressed in her striking red gown, standing over a visibly pregnant Khloe Thorne. The audio was crystal clear, piped through the ballroom's premium surround-sound speakers.

"You were supposed to stay quiet," Isabella’s voice echoed through the grand hall, amplified and chilling. "Smile for the cameras, have the baby, and then disappear."

The ballroom fell into a suffocating, dead silence. Nobody breathed. Every eye was locked on the screen.

On screen, Isabella shoved Khloe. The pregnant woman stumbled, crashing into the table, glass shattering around her.

"Turn it off!" Victor Rossi roared, his face turning a deep, angry purple. "Turn that garbage off right now! Who is running the AV booth? I'll have you fired!"

But nobody moved. The security guards at the doors stood like statues, their faces stoic. They had received their orders directly from the Chief Director.

Then came the climax of the video. Isabella stepped forward, her face twisted in malice, and drove her pointed high heel directly into Khloe’s side. The sickening sound of the impact and Khloe’s agonizing scream reverberated through the ballroom, causing several women in the crowd to cover their mouths in horror.

On the right side of the screen, a series of documents began to scroll. They were bank statements, wire transfers, and encrypted email threads showing a direct connection between Rossi Pharmaceuticals and a known corporate espionage syndicate. The documents proved, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that the Rossis had been systematically stealing patent data from both the Thorne Group and St. Jude's Memorial.

"This is a fabrication!" Victor shrieked, his voice cracking with panic as he realized his entire empire was crumbling in front of the very people he had spent his life trying to impress. "This is a deepfake! Richard, tell them! This is a lie!"

But Richard Thorne could only stare at the screen, his face completely devoid of color. He knew this was the end.

The double doors of the ballroom burst open.

A dozen federal agents in windbreakers marked with 'FBI' poured into the room, led by two local police detectives. They marched straight past the stunned socialites and surrounded Victor Rossi.

"Victor Rossi," the lead detective announced, his voice carrying over the silent room. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit corporate espionage, grand theft of intellectual property, and accessory to aggravated assault of a pregnant woman. You have the right to remain silent."

As the handcuffs clicked into place around Victor's wrists, Marcus Thorne stepped out from the crowd. His tuxedo jacket was still missing, his shirt stained with his wife's blood. He looked like a man who had walked through hell and had nothing left to lose.

He walked up to Victor, his eyes cold and dead.

"Your daughter is downstairs in a holding cell, Victor," Marcus said quietly. "And you are going to a federal penitentiary. Your company is done. Your family name is done. I will personally spend every dollar of the Thorne fortune to ensure neither of you ever sees the light of day again."

"Marcus, please!" Richard Thorne begged, grabbing his son's arm. "Think of the company! We can still salvage this!"

Marcus turned to his father and coldly brushed his hand off his arm. "There is no company, Father. I have just authorized the board to file for voluntary restructuring. I have resigned as CEO. I am handing all our medical patents back to the Vance Foundation. I am done protecting your lies."

With that, Marcus turned his back on his father and the ruined remnants of the high society he had once ruled, walking back toward the elevators to be with his wife.
