Chapter 3 - The Darkest Hour

The red emergency lights of the operating theater spun in a sickening, hypnotic rhythm. Marcus stood outside the double doors, his hands pressed against the glass, helpless. He was banned from entering due to the high-risk nature of the procedure. Through the window, he could see a dozen medical professionals moving with practiced, frantic speed around his wife.

Dr. Arthur Vance was at the center of the chaos, his scrub suit quickly becoming stained with blood.

Marcus had never felt so utterly powerless. He was a billionaire, a man whose name could move stock markets and silence politicians with a single phone call. Yet, in this moment, all his wealth could not buy a single steady heartbeat for his wife or his unborn son.

His phone buzzed incessantly in his pocket. He pulled it out to see dozens of missed calls from his father, Richard Thorne, and his PR team. The gala downstairs was beginning to realize something was wrong. The host and hostesses had vanished, and the Chief Director of the hospital had ordered a partial lockdown of the VIP wing.

He answered the call from his father.

"Marcus! What the hell is going on up there?" Richard Thorne’s booming, impatient voice echoed through the receiver. "The Rossis are asking where Isabella is. Victor Rossi is threatening to pull his multi-million dollar donation to our new pediatric wing if we don't produce his daughter immediately. Get down here and fix this!"

"Isabella is in security custody, Father," Marcus said, his voice dead, devoid of any emotion. "She assaulted Khloe. She kicked her in the stomach. Khloe is in emergency surgery right now. The baby might not make it."

There was a brief, stunned silence on the other end of the line. But what came next made Marcus's blood run cold.

"Dammit, Marcus!" Richard hissed, his voice hushed but furious. "Why did you let it get to this point? We need the Rossi merger! If this gets out, the stock—"

"The stock?" Marcus interrupted, his voice rising in disbelief. "Your daughter-in-law and your grandson are dying in an operating room, and you are worried about the stock?"

"You don't understand the bigger picture, boy!" Richard snapped. "The Rossis have leverage over us. If they pull out of the merger, our debt-to-equity ratio will trigger a margin call on our primary shares. We could lose the Thorne Group by the end of the week! You need to go to Victor, tell him it was a domestic dispute, and agree to settle this quietly. We can pay Khloe’s family off—"

"Khloe’s uncle is Arthur Vance," Marcus said, cutting him off with a chilling calmness.

Silence. A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the line.

"What did you say?" Richard whispered, the arrogance completely draining from his voice.

"Arthur Vance is Khloe's uncle. She is the Vance heiress, Father. The Vance family—the ones who own fifty percent of the land our hospitals are built on, the ones who control the medical licensing boards, the ones who actually own the patents we've been using for the past five years." Marcus let out a bitter, hollow laugh. "We thought we were marrying a quiet, middle-class girl who would be easy to control. In reality, she was the only thing keeping the Vance empire from crushing us. And now, because of your greed and my blindness, we have destroyed the only shield we had."

"Marcus... you must find a way to fix this," Richard stammered, panic finally setting in. "Talk to Vance. Offer him whatever he wants."

"I will do nothing of the sort," Marcus said. "If my wife or my son dies tonight, I will personally hand over every piece of evidence to the federal prosecutors. I will watch the Thorne Group burn to the ground, and I will be the one who lights the match."

He hung up the phone, his hand trembling.

He turned back to the glass window. Inside, the activity had suddenly ceased. The frantic movement of the doctors slowed down. Dr. Vance stepped back from the table, his shoulders slumped.

Marcus’s heart stopped. No. Please, God, no.

The doors of the operating room swung open, and Dr. Vance stepped out. He pulled off his surgical mask, his face looking ten years older. There was blood on his gloves, and his eyes were dark with an unspeakable sorrow.

"Dr. Vance..." Marcus gasped, his voice barely a whisper. "Please tell me."

Dr. Vance looked at him for a long, agonizing moment. "Your son is alive, Marcus. He is incredibly small, and his lungs are underdeveloped, but he is fighting. We have placed him in the NICU under twenty-four-hour observation."

Marcus let out a ragged sob of relief, but his relief was short-lived as he saw the expression on the older doctor's face.

"But Khloe..." Marcus whispered. "What about Khloe?"

"She suffered severe internal bleeding," Dr. Vance said, his voice trembling slightly. "We managed to stop it, but she has slipped into a coma. The next forty-eight hours will decide whether she ever wakes up."
