Chapter 2 - The Severed Thread

The revelation of the security footage hung in the air like a guillotine. Isabella backed away until her heels hit the glass-strewn carpet, her eyes darting wilding around the room looking for an exit.

"Marcus," she whimpered, her voice entirely stripped of its previous malice. "Marcus, please. You know how much I love you. I did it for us. She was holding you back. She’s a nobody! She doesn't belong in your world!"

Marcus looked at her, and the utter disgust in his eyes was more violent than any physical blow. "A nobody?" he echoed, his voice dangerously low. "She is my wife. She is the mother of my child. And she is the niece of the man who holds the keys to this entire city’s medical infrastructure. You are the one who is nothing, Isabella."

He stepped toward her, and Isabella shrank back.

"I want her out of this hospital," Marcus said, his voice shaking with a cold rage. "And I want the police called immediately."

"Wait, Marcus," Dr. Vance interrupted, his voice holding a terrifying level of calculation. "The police will certainly be involved. But we must be strategic. If we arrest her now, her father, Victor Rossi, will have his army of lawyers here within thirty minutes. They will suppress the footage, buy out the local media, and spin this as a medical mishap. No. We do not strike when the enemy is prepared."

"Then what do you suggest?" Marcus demanded, his hands clenching into fists. "She tried to kill my child!"

"The gala downstairs is still in full swing," Dr. Vance said, a dark smile playing on his lips. "The city's elite, the media, and Victor Rossi himself are all celebrating your family's foundation. We are going to let them celebrate a little longer. While they drink champagne, we will prepare a public execution of the Rossi name."

He looked at his tablet and tapped a few buttons. "I have already sent the footage to my personal legal team. They are drafting a formal filing of attempted murder, aggravated assault of a pregnant woman, and corporate espionage."

"Corporate espionage?" Isabella gasped, her voice trembling. "What are you talking about? I didn't steal anything!"

"Oh, but you did," Dr. Vance said calmly. "Or rather, your father did. For the past six months, St. Jude’s has been developing a revolutionary neonatal monitoring software. Yesterday, we discovered a breach in our server. The IP address was traced back to a shell company owned by Rossi Pharmaceuticals. We were looking for the connection. Tonight, you gave it to us."

He looked at Marcus. "Your father-in-law's company has been working with Isabella's father to bankrupt the Thorne Group's medical division by stealing our patents. Isabella wasn't just trying to get rid of Khloe to marry you, Marcus. She was placed in your orbit to dismantle your empire from the inside out."

The pieces of the puzzle began to fall into place with a terrifying, clicking precision. Marcus felt a cold sweat break out across his neck. He remembered the private dinners, the 'accidental' meetings at charity events, the way Isabella always seemed to ask about the Thorne Group’s upcoming pharmaceutical mergers. He had thought she was merely social climbing. In reality, she was a trojan horse.

"Is this true?" Marcus whispered, his eyes locking onto Isabella. "The dinners... the charity boards... all of it was a setup?"

Isabella’s silence was her confession. Her chin trembled, but the desperate, cornered animal within her finally reared its ugly head. "So what if it is?" she spat, her voice dripping with venom. "Your empire is built on lies anyway, Marcus! Your father started this war ten years ago when he ruined my family's first shipping company. We just took back what was ours! And as for your precious wife..." She glared at Khloe with pure, undistilled hatred. "...she was just an easy target. A weak, pathetic girl who thought a billionaire could actually love her."

"That is enough," Dr. Vance roared. He pressed a button on the wall communicator. "Security, code red in VIP Suite 4. Escort Miss Rossi to the holding room in the basement. Do not let her leave, and do not allow her access to her phone. If she resists, use whatever force is necessary."

Within seconds, four heavily armed, private hospital security guards burst into the room. They grabbed Isabella by her arms, ignoring her shrieks of outrage as they dragged her out, her red dress trailing behind her like a smear of blood.

Once the doors closed, the room fell into a tense, fragile silence.

Marcus rushed to Khloe’s side, falling to his knees beside the bed. He reached out to touch her hand, but she flinched, pulling it away. The rejection was physical, a sharp pain that pierced his chest.

"Khloe," he whispered, his voice cracking. "I am so sorry. I didn't know. I swear to you, I didn't know what she was."

Khloe looked at him, her eyes tired, hollowed out by pain and betrayal. "You didn't want to know, Marcus. You liked the attention. You liked having two women fight over you. You let her into our lives because it fed your ego."

"That's not true," he protested, but the words felt hollow in his throat.

"It is true," she said, a tear slipping down her pale cheek. "And now, my baby might pay the price for your vanity."

Before Marcus could speak, the heart monitor began to beep in a wild, frantic alarm. The lines on the screen spiked erratically.

"Dr. Vance!" the nurse who had just entered the room screamed. "The fetal heart rate is dropping! We have a placental abruption! We need to prep for an emergency C-section right now!"
