Chapter 6 - The Boardroom Coup

The penthouse boardroom of Sterling Enterprises looked out over the entire skyline of Philadelphia. It was a room of glass, polished walnut, and immense, silent power.
At 2:00 p.m., the fifteen members of the board of directors sat in their leather chairs, the atmosphere thick with anticipation. Julian sat at the head of the table, his face pale and drawn. Beside him, as a major shareholder through her family's trust, sat Eleanor Vance.
"We have a quorum," Julian said, his voice tight. "Letâs begin. The primary item on todayâs agenda is the approval of the merger between Sterling Enterprises and Vance Holdings. This merger will secure our dominance in the eastern shipping corridors."
"Before we vote, Mr. Sterling," one of the older board members, a long-time ally of Julianâs father, spoke up. "We must address the rumors. The newspapers are already reporting that your wife had a violent fall at your estate. There are whispers of domestic instability. If this affects our public imageâ"
"My wifeâs accident was a personal tragedy," Julian cut him off, his voice rising in anger. "It has no bearing on the financial viability of this merger."
"Oh, but it does, Julian," a voice clear, resonant, and entirely steady spoke from the doorway.
Every head in the room snapped around.
Victoria stood in the frame.
She was not wearing a hospital gown. She wore a stunning, tailored maternity dress of deep, royal blue, her dark hair falling in perfect waves over her shoulders. Her face was radiant, her skin glowing, with no trace of the "critical condition" the family had been whispering about. Behind her walked Dr. Marcus Vance and two officers from the Federal Investigation Division.
Julian stood up so fast his chair screeched against the hardwood. "Victoria? What... what is the meaning of this? The doctor said you were on life support!"
"The doctor lied to protect my life from the people in this room," Victoria said, walking slowly into the boardroom. She didn't look at Julian. Her eyes were fixed on Eleanor, whose face had turned a horrific, translucent white.
"Victoria, darling," Eleanor stammered, her hands shaking as she tried to gather her papers. "This... this is a private board meeting. You have no rightâ"
"I have every right," Victoria said, standing at the opposite end of the massive table. She reached into her bag and pulled out a small, sleek black tablet, connecting it to the boardroom's projection system.
"Before you vote on this merger," Victoria said, looking at the board members, "I think you should see the true cost of doing business with the Vance family."
She pressed a button.
The massive, eighty-inch screen on the wall came alive.
The video was crystal clear. It showed the top of the grand staircase at the Sterling estate. It showed Victoria walking, and then, Mrs. Gableâs lace-trimmed hand reaching out, pushing her with sickening, deliberate force. The gasp of the board members was collective and sharp.
But the video didn't stop there.
The screen split, showing a second windowâthe live, high-definition recording of the hospital hallway from three hours ago. The audio captured Mrs. Gableâs voice perfectly as she typed her text message: "The child won't survive the hour. Prepare the press release."
And then came the final blow: the audio recording Victoria had captured while lying on the slate floor. Mrs. Gable's cold, mocking voice echoed through the boardroom: "A pity. You always were stubborn, Victoria. But a fall like this... even if you survive, that little bastard inside you won't. Julian deserves a pure bloodline... Miss Eleanor will have him back."
The silence in the boardroom was absolute. You could hear the distant hum of the city streets twenty floors below.
Julian looked from the screen to Eleanor, his eyes wide with a sudden, devastating comprehension. "Eleanor... you... you did this?"
"Julian, no! Itâs a fabrication! A deepfake!" Eleanor screamed, standing up and backing away from the table. "Sheâs trying to ruin us! Sheâs a liar, a common nobody whoâ"
"The video has been forensically certified by the federal police, Miss Vance," the lead officer stepped forward, pulling a pair of handcuffs from his belt. "Eleanor Vance, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit attempted murder and corporate espionage. Mrs. Gable has already been detained at the hospital; she confessed ten minutes into her interrogation."

The officers walked around the table, their heavy boots sounding like the ticking of a clock, and clicked the handcuffs around Eleanor's slender wrists. She sobbed, her proud demeanor collapsing into a messy, hysterical panic as they led her out of the room.
Julian collapsed back into his chair, his head in his hands. He looked like a man who had suddenly realized that the temple he had spent his life building was made of dry straw, and his wife had just lit the match.
