Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Server

Victoria pushed herself up from the cold floor, a sharp gasp escaping her lips as her bruised shoulder protested. She immediately placed both hands on her belly, closing her eyes as she waited. A second later, she felt a strong, reassuring kick from within.

Thank God. Her baby was safe. The controlled fall had worked.

She knew she had less than ten minutes. If she stayed on the floor, the ambulance would eventually arrive, and Mrs. Gable would play the part of the grieving, panicked housekeeper. The medical staff would take Victoria away, and the security footage—the only physical proof of the push—would be wiped forever.

Ignoring the throbbing pain in her hip, Victoria scrambled toward the small study beneath the stairs.

Julian’s family was wealthy, but they were old-fashioned. They relied on local physical servers rather than cloud backups for their security network, believing it kept their dirty laundry safer from external hackers. What they didn't know was that before Victoria married Julian and was forced into the role of a quiet, trophy wife, she had worked as a system administrator for a major financial firm.

She slipped into the study, her fingers flying across the keyboard of the auxiliary terminal.

The login screen was protected, but Julian’s passwords were laughably predictable—always a combination of his childhood dog’s name and the founding year of Sterling Enterprises. Within forty seconds, she was inside the local network.

She opened the directory for the second-floor corridor camera.

There it was. The raw footage from ten minutes ago. The video showed Victoria walking toward the stairs, and then, a figure emerging from the linen closet behind her. A hand, clad in a distinctive lace-trimmed sleeve—the exact sleeve of Mrs. Gable’s uniform—reaching out and pushing her violently.

"I have you," Victoria whispered, her voice shaking with adrenaline.

She didn't delete the footage. Instead, she cloned the directory, sending the encrypted file to a hidden cloud drive she maintained under her maiden name. Then, she set up a delayed trigger. If she did not enter a safety code within twenty-four hours, the video, along with the audio recording she had just captured on her phone while playing dead, would be automatically sent to the federal police and Julian’s primary business competitors.

A sharp noise sounded from the hallway. The basement door was opening.

Victoria quickly cleared the terminal history, shut down the monitor, and hurried back to her position on the slate tiles. She arranged her limbs in the exact, awkward sprawl as before, pulling her hair over her face, and closed her eyes just as Mrs. Gable’s heels clicked back into the foyer.

A moment later, the housekeeper’s voice rang out, high, shrill, and perfectly rehearsed.

"Oh my God! Someone help! The mistress has fallen! Call an ambulance!"

Victoria lay in the dark, a cold, invisible smile forming on her lips.

Let the theater begin, she thought. Because I am about to write the final act.
