Chapter 2 - The Cold Slate

The silence in the grand foyer of the Sterling estate was thick, smelling of beeswax, rain, and the faint, coppery tang of fear.
Victoria lay completely motionless on the gray slate tiles. She kept her eyes shut, forcing her breathing into a shallow, ragged rhythm. She had spent the last three years navigating the minefield of the Sterling family, but nothing had prepared her for this.
Her fingers, hidden beneath the fold of her heavy maternity coat, were still trembling from the impact. When the sudden, violent push had come from behind at the top of the grand staircase, her instinctsâhoned by a childhood of instability and a marriage built on secretsâhad saved her. Instead of tumbling blindly, she had gripped the mahogany handrail with bruising force, sliding and bracing her body to control the trajectory of her fall. She had landed hard on her side, protecting her swollen eight-month belly with her arms, absorbing the brunt of the impact on her shoulder and hip.
She was bruised, sore, and terrified, but she was conscious. And she was waiting.
Above her, the slow, rhythmic click of heels descended the stairs.
It was Mrs. Gable, the head housekeeper who had served the Sterling family for over two decades. To Victoriaâs husband, Julian, Mrs. Gable was a loyal institution, a woman who had practically raised him. To Victoria, she had always been a shadow in the corner, watching, calculating, and whispering poison into Julianâs ear.
The footsteps stopped right at Victoria's head.
Victoria held her breath, keeping her muscles completely limp. She felt the toe of a leather shoe coldly nudge her ankle, checking for a reaction.
"Still breathing," Mrs. Gableâs voice cut through the quiet hallway, dry and entirely devoid of warmth. There was a faint, rustling sound as she leaned over Victoriaâs prone form. "A pity. You always were stubborn, Victoria. But a fall like this... even if you survive, that little bastard inside you won't. Itâs better this way. Julian deserves a pure bloodline, not the spawn of a social climber."
Victoriaâs heart hammered violently against her ribs, but she didn't let a single muscle twitch. The sheer, chilling malice of the womanâs words solidified something inside her. The fear vanished, replaced by a cold, burning rage.
Mrs. Gable reached into her pocket, pulling out her phone. She didn't dial 911. Instead, she dialed a private number.
"Itâs done," the housekeeper whispered into the receiver. "She fell. Down the main flight. Yes, sheâs unconscious. Iâll wait another ten minutes before calling the ambulance to ensure the delay does the job. Make sure Julianâs meeting in the city runs late. He doesn't need to be here for the aftermath."
She paused, listening to the voice on the other end, a cruel smirk evident in her tone. "Of course, Miss Eleanor. Once the child is gone, Julian will have no reason to keep her. He will come back to you. Iâll clear the security footage from the landing server immediately."
Mrs. Gable hung up, turned on her heel, and began walking toward the basement stairs where the main security servers were housed.
The second the basement door clicked shut, Victoria snapped her eyes open.

She pushed her dark hair away from her face, her gaze locking onto the closed door with a lethal, icy focus. The game had completely changed. It wasn't just about surviving her husband's toxic family anymore.
It was about tearing them apart, piece by piece.
