Chapter 4 - The Hospital Sanctuary

The flashing red and blue lights of the ambulance painted the limestone facade of the Sterling mansion in eerie shades of violet.
Victoria was lifted onto a gurney, a cervical collar strapped tightly around her neck. She kept her eyes half-closed, playing the part of a concussed, disoriented victim. Beside her, Mrs. Gable was weeping softly into a lace handkerchief, her voice trembling as she spoke to the paramedics.
"She just slipped... the stairs are so polished... I told her to be careful in those shoes..."
Victoria didn't say a word. She allowed them to wheel her into the ambulance, her eyes occasionally drifting to the dark, winter sky outside.
By the time they arrived at the St. Jude Private Hospital, the waiting room was already locked down by Sterling security. But Victoria had already made a call.
As the gurney rolled through the double doors of the emergency wing, a tall, sharp-eyed doctor stepped into the path. It was Dr. Marcus Vance, Victoriaâs childhood friend and the only person in the city who knew the true nature of her marriage to Julian.
"Iâll take her from here," Marcus said, his voice leaving no room for argument. He looked at Mrs. Gable, who was trying to push her way into the treatment room. "Family and staff must wait in the reception area. No exceptions."
"But I am the head of the household," Mrs. Gable protested, her tears instantly drying into a cold, demanding stare. "Mr. Julian Sterling insisted I stay by her side."
"Mr. Julian Sterling is not a medical professional," Marcus replied coldly. "Security, please escort this woman to the waiting room."
The heavy doors swung shut, cutting off Mrs. Gable's protests.
The moment they were inside the private room, Victoria sat up, stripping the neck collar off and throwing it onto the metal tray.
"Marcus," she said, her voice tight. "We don't have much time."
"Victoria, thank God," Marcus said, immediately checking her vitals and running a portable ultrasound over her belly. He looked at the monitor, his face softening with immense relief. "The baby is fine. The placenta is intact. You have some severe bruising on your shoulder and hip, but you managed to avoid any direct abdominal trauma. How did this happen?"
"Gable pushed me," Victoria said, her eyes burning with a dark, steady light. "Sheâs working with Eleanor. They wanted the baby gone so Julian would have a reason to divorce me and return to the family alliance."
Marcusâs jaw tightened. He knew Eleanor Vanceâshe was his own distant cousin, a woman consumed by greed and the desire to merge the Vance and Sterling dynasties. "Those monsters. We have to call the police, Victoria. We have the medical report now. I can certify the physical trauma."
"No," Victoria said, reaching out and grabbing his arm. "If we call the local police, Julianâs lawyers will have the case buried before sunrise. The Sterling family owns half the judiciary in this state. I don't want a trial where they can buy the judge. I want to destroy them completely."
She reached into her pocket and pulled out her phone, showing Marcus the encrypted cloud link.
"This is the security footage Gable tried to delete, along with her confession while I was lying on the floor," Victoria said. "Iâm going to let them think theyâve won. For the next twenty-four hours, I want you to tell the family that the baby is in critical condition and that I am in a medically induced coma."
Marcus looked at the screen, then at Victoriaâs fierce, determined face. He saw the quiet girl who had spent years being pushed into the shadows finally step into the light.
"What are you going to do?" he asked.
May you like
Victoria looked out the window, where the first snow of the year was beginning to fall over the city lights.
"Iâm going to invite them to a celebration," she whispered.
