Chapter 9 - The Trial of Premeditation

Two months later, the State Circuit Court was packed for the trial regarding the commercial wire fraud and conspiracy charges filed against Caleb Rowan and his associate, Rachel’s brother, Julian.
Nora sat at the prosecution table in a sharp navy blazer, cool and poised. Beside her sat the state prosecutor, who was presenting a mountain of digital evidence, bank records, and internal emails obtained through the state police raid on Julian's logistics firm.
Caleb’s new defense attorney attempted to paint his client as a desperate father overwhelmed by financial pressure, caught up in complex business arrangements he didn't fully understand.
Then, the state called its surprise witness.
The doors at the back of the courtroom opened, and a teenager in a modest dark dress walked down the center aisle.
It was Sophie.
Caleb sat up straight, his face pale with shock. "Sophie...?" he whispered, reaching out a hand, but his lawyer pulled him back down.
Sophie took the stand, refusing to look at her father. She took the oath, her voice steady despite her visible nervousness.
"Sophie," the prosecutor asked gently. "Can you tell the court about the conversation you had with your father on the morning of Thursday, the day you arrived at Mrs. Bennett's house?"
Sophie took a deep breath, looking directly at the judge.
"My father told me that Mrs. Bennett was mentally unstable," Sophie testified, her voice echoing clearly through the quiet courtroom. "He told me that if I acted like I owned the house, Mrs. Bennett would break down and sign over fifty percent of her business shares to him just to keep the peace. He told me he had set up accounts in my name to receive funds from her company."
A collective murmur rippled through the gallery.

Caleb buried his face in his hands as his lawyer slumped back into his seat. Sophie’s testimony shattered any remaining defense argument that Caleb was merely a confused husband. It proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that his actions were a cold, calculated attempt at corporate blackmail using his own child as a weapon.
Nora looked at Sophie from across the room. The teenager met Nora’s eyes briefly, giving a small, subtle nod of apology and strength. Sophie was no longer the pawn in her father's game; she had chosen the truth.
