Chapter 4 - The Audit

The silence in the kitchen was total. Even Sophie, sensing the sudden, dangerous shift in air pressure, stopped her smirking and looked between her father and Nora.

"Nora... what are you talking about?" Caleb stuttered, his confident demeanor vanishing like smoke in a breeze. "That... that was for family investments. I was planning to talk to you about that—"

"You were planning to use it to pay for Sophie’s private school tuition," Nora interrupted, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp register. "And you were planning to use my business capital to cover her horse riding lessons, isn't that right, Caleb? I read your email to Rachel."

Caleb took a step back, hitting the edge of the kitchen island. "You... you went through my personal emails?"

"You printed it to the house printer, you idiot," Nora said with supreme contempt. "You left it sitting on the output tray. You were so arrogant, so convinced that I was a soft-hearted pushover who would just accept your ambush, that you didn't even bother covering your tracks."

Sophie looked at her father, genuine confusion cracking her entitlement. "Dad? What is she talking about? You said you were paying for my school! You said you made more money than she did!"

Caleb swallowed hard, sweating visible beneath his collar. "Sophie, go to your room. Now."

"No, Sophie, stay right here," Nora commanded, her voice authority itself. "Because you need to understand the reality of the situation you have just walked into."

Nora pulled up a document on her tablet and turned it toward both of them.

"This is the prenuptial agreement your father signed four years ago," Nora explained to the girl. "It includes a strict infidelity and financial fraud clause. If either party attempts to convert personal or joint assets fraudulently, the marriage is instantly dissolved, and the offending party forfeits all claims to joint spousal support, property, and legal fee reimbursement."

Nora turned her eyes to Caleb, who looked as if he were about to throw up.

"As of eight o'clock this morning," Nora continued, "my corporate legal team is filing for an emergency freezing of all joint accounts. I am also filing a formal complaint for civil fraud with the district attorney's office regarding the forty thousand dollars."

"Nora, please!" Caleb begged, dropping all remaining pretense of anger and falling into pure panic. "We can talk about this! I was under immense pressure! Rachel was threatening to take away my visitation rights if I didn't prove I could provide a high-end lifestyle for Sophie! I did it for my daughter!"

"Don't you dare blame your child for your greed," Nora snapped. "You did it because you are a weak, selfish man who wanted to play the big, successful patriarch on my dime."

Nora turned to Sophie, whose eyes were now wide with genuine shock and embarrassment. The grand fairy-tale life her father had promised her—the mansion, the unlimited budget, the wealthy stepmother who would cater to her every whim—was crumbling into dust right before her eyes.

"Sophie," Nora said gently, though her voice remained firm. "I do not hate you. You are sixteen, and you were lied to by a man you trusted. But this house is not your home, and it never will be. Take off my robe, pack your bags, and prepare to leave."

"Leave?" Sophie stammered, tears finally spilling over her lashes. "Where are we supposed to go?"

"That," Nora said, turning her back on both of them and walking toward her study, "is a question for your father."
