Chapter 10 - The Fall of the Architect

The judge did not deliberate long.
When Court reconvened three days later, Judge Thornton delivered a crushing verdict that laid bare the full consequences of Caleb’s hubris.
"Mr. Rowan," Judge Thornton began, his voice thunderous. "You engaged in a persistent, calculated pattern of domestic abuse, financial predation, and corporate fraud. You exploited your marriage, attempted to dismantle your wife's hard-earned business enterprise, and degraded the moral integrity of your teenage child by enlisting her in your criminal schemes."
The judge slammed his hand onto his bench.
"On the counts of commercial wire fraud, grand larceny, and criminal conspiracy, you are hereby sentenced to six years in state prison, with no possibility of early parole until forty-eight months have been served. You are further ordered to pay full restitution of one hundred and two thousand dollars to Bennett Rehabilitation Healthcare Systems."
Caleb fell back into his chair, staring at the ceiling in total, utter defeat. His associate, Julian, received a three-year sentence for his role in the procurement scam.
As court officers stepped forward to put Caleb in heavy iron handcuffs, he turned his head toward Nora one last time. His eyes were empty, stripped of every ounce of charm, control, and entitlement he had once used to walk into her life.

Nora did not smile, nor did she show anger. She simply adjusted her coat, picked up her leather briefcase, and turned her back on him.
She walked out of the courtroom doors into the bright afternoon sunlight, leaving Caleb to face the darkness he had created for himself.
