Chapter 7 - The Shadows in Milwaukee

The expansion of Nora’s fifth rehabilitation clinic in Milwaukee was supposed to be a triumph—a testament to her resilience after sweeping Caleb and his deceptive schemes out of her life. But success, Nora quickly realized, often acts as a beacon for the desperate.
Three weeks after the opening of the clinic, Nora was sitting in her bright new Milwaukee corner office when her operations manager, Elena, knocked frantically on the frosted glass door.
"Nora, we have a major problem with the payroll system and vendor ledger," Elena said, her voice laced with panic as she set a tablet on the desk. "Someone accessed the clinic’s pre-opening procurement accounts from an off-site IP address. Over sixty thousand dollars in equipment orders were diverted to a fraudulent shell supply company in Illinois."
Nora’s eyes narrowed as she pulled the audit logs onto her monitor. Her hands didn't shake. Having survived Caleb's insidious financial draining months ago, her instincts for detecting fraud were razor-sharp.
She traced the digital signature back through the secure server. The unauthorized user hadn't hacked the system using sophisticated code; they had logged in using a legacy administrative password—one that had belonged to a remote administrative manager Caleb had recommended two years ago during their marriage.
Nora picked up her phone and dialed Marcus Vance immediately.
"Marcus," Nora said without greeting. "Caleb didn't operate alone. He had an insider within my clinic’s financial supply chain."
"Are you sure?" Marcus replied, his voice shifting instantly into high alert.
"The IP address used to divert sixty thousand dollars of clinic funds this morning traces back to a logistics firm registered under the name of Rachel’s brother—Caleb’s former brother-in-law," Nora stated coldly. "Caleb didn't just steal forty thousand dollars from our joint account during our marriage, Marcus. He was building a slow leak into my corporate expansion plans long before he tried to move Sophie into my home."

"He was trying to bankrupt your expansion to force you into relying on his financial management," Marcus concluded, gasping slightly. "It was an orchestrated corporate takeover wrapped in a marriage."
Nora stood up, looking out over the Milwaukee skyline. "He thought I would be too distracted by the divorce and the house dispute to audit my commercial accounts. Call the state prosecutor's financial crimes unit, Marcus. It’s time to cut off the rest of his network."
