Chapter 6 - The Sweetest Taste

Two weeks after the ribbon-cutting gala.

The afternoon sun was warm and gentle over the rolling green hills of Upstate New York. Nestled beside a serene blue lake sat a cozy, beautifully restored stone cottage—Olivia’s private weekend retreat, far away from the noise and concrete of Manhattan.

A long wooden dining table was set up on the outdoor patio overlooking the water, decorated with simple wild lavender and white tablecloths.

It was a small, intimate gathering. No press, no corporate investors, no security guards. Just Olivia, Julian, Sophie, and a few close friends enjoying a quiet Sunday afternoon barbecue.

Laughter drifted across the water as Julian manned the grill, arguing playfully with Ethan over the proper way to sear a steak.

Olivia sat on the wooden porch steps, sipping a glass of chilled iced tea, watching the sunlight bounce off the rippling surface of the lake.

Sophie came out through the screen door, carrying a small, ribbon-tied bakery box.

"Look what arrived from the city," Sophie smiled, sitting down on the step beside Olivia.

Olivia looked at the box. "What is it?"

"It’s from Dr. Harper’s wife," Sophie explained, opening the lid. Inside sat a simple, beautifully baked round vanilla cake, topped with fresh strawberries and powdered sugar. "She baked it for us as an anniversary gift."

Olivia looked at the cake. For a brief second, a memory flashed through her mind—the four-tier monstrosity at the St. Regis, the glowing crystal chandeliers, the amber glass bottle, the feeling of absolute betrayal.

But the flash passed as quickly as it had come, leaving behind no fear, no pain, and no regret. The darkness had completely lost its grip on her heart.

"It looks delicious," Olivia said softly, a genuine, radiant smile blooming across her face.

Sophie pulled out two small forks from her apron pocket and handed one to Olivia. "Would you like the first bite?"

Olivia looked at the young girl who had become her sister in every way that truly mattered. She looked at Julian, who was laughing by the lake, and at the bright, clear sky above them.

"Together," Olivia said gently.

Side by side, sitting on the sun-drenched porch steps of her peaceful home, Olivia and Sophie lifted their forks and took a sweet, perfect bite of the cake.

It tasted like freedom. It tasted like truth. It tasted like home.
