Chapter 4 - The Spider’s Web

By late afternoon, the tide began to violently turn.

Thanks to Sophie’s precise memory, Detective Reyes’s forensic team recovered the amber glass vial from the bottom of a laundry bin at the hotel. Not only did the vial contain traces of the liquid scopolamine, but it was plastered with Daniel Cross’s clear, un-smudged thumbprint.

By 4:00 PM, the district attorney officially upgraded Daniel’s charges to First-Degree Attempted Murder with premeditation, revoking his bail entirely.

Meanwhile, Chloe Vance was sitting in an interrogation room at NYPD’s 17th Precinct, her high-priced court-appointed attorney sitting beside her. The polished, arrogance she had displayed at the wedding had completely vanished. Her designer dress was wrinkled, her eyes bloodshot, and her dark roots were starting to show under her blonde highlights.

The door opened, and Detective Reyes walked in, accompanied not by another cop, but by Olivia and Ethan.

"What is this?" Chloe’s lawyer stood up angrily. "My client is not answering questions from civil litigators!"

"Sit down, counselor," Reyes said flatly. "Miss Sterling is here under prosecutor clearance to review a civil asset recovery offer."

Olivia sat across from Chloe. The stainless steel table between them was cold and bare.

For a long moment, Olivia just looked at her former friend. She felt no anger anymore. Looking at Chloe now, all she saw was a pathetic, empty shadow of a person who had traded twelve years of genuine friendship for a pile of stolen paper.

"You look tired, Chloe," Olivia said quietly.

Chloe glared at her, her jaw working furiously. "Save your pity, Liv. You came here to gloat? Go ahead. Enjoy your victory."

"This isn't a victory," Olivia said gently. "It’s a tragedy. I loved you like a sister, Chloe. I trusted you with my life, my home, my family secrets. Why? Was ten million dollars really worth burning down everything we built?"

Chloe let out a harsh, bitter laugh. "Built? You built it, Olivia! Your father’s money bought the building! Your family’s name got the government contracts! Every time we went to a gala, the press called me 'Olivia Sterling’s assistant'! I was the one who spent eighty hours a week redrawing the structural calculations! I was the genius behind the Hudson Tower project, but your name was on the plaque!"

"I gave you forty percent of the company shares last year, Chloe," Olivia reminded her, her voice trembling slightly. "I offered to put your name on the firm's letterhead next month."

"Too late!" Chloe screamed, her eyes wild. "It was always too late! Daniel offered me a way out! He showed me that you were weak, that you were soft! He told me that once you were out of the picture, we could run Sterling Architecture together!"

"Daniel lied to you, Chloe," Ethan chimed in, laying a set of bank documents on the table. "While you were buying poison off the dark web, Daniel was opening a private foundation account in the Cayman Islands under a single name: Daniel Cross. There was no ten million dollars for you. He was planning to frame you for Olivia’s poisoning after he secured the voting shares."

Chloe froze. The color drained from her face until she looked like a corpse. "W-what?"

"We pulled the wire instruction drafts from Daniel’s computer," Detective Reyes added, sliding a printed document across the steel table. "Look at the beneficiary line, Miss Vance. Your name isn't on it. In fact, Daniel set up an automated tip line email to the police, scheduled to be sent twelve hours after the wedding, pointing to you as a jealous rival who acted alone."

Chloe stared at the paper. She read the beneficiary name—Daniel Cross. She read the automated tip-off draft that labeled her a 'deranged stalker.'

"No..." Chloe whispered, her hands shaking violently. "No, no, no... he loved me! He said we were going to Paris after the investigation closed! He swore to me!"

"He used you," Olivia said softly, standing up from her chair. "Just like he tried to use me. The difference is, I had a real friend in that room who watched out for me. You had a monster who was preparing to throw you to the wolves."

Chloe collapsed forward onto the table, bursting into ugly, gasping sobs. The crushing weight of her absolute betrayal by the man she had destroyed her life for finally broke her completely.

"I’ll talk!" Chloe wept hysterically, grabbing Detective Reyes’s sleeve. "I’ll tell you everything! The offshore accounts, the forged signatures, the creditors Daniel was hiding from! I’ll give you everything on him! Just don't let him leave me in here alone!"

Olivia turned her back on her former best friend, walking out of the interrogation room into the hallway.

Ethan followed her out. "That’s it, Olivia. With Chloe’s confession, Daniel’s defense is completely obliterated. He’ll be taking a plea deal for twenty-five years without parole."

Olivia leaned against the cold plaster wall of the precinct hallway, closing her eyes. She felt a profound sense of exhaustion, but for the first time in days, the suffocating knot in her chest finally loosened.

Sophie came walking down the hallway, holding two paper cups of hot coffee from the diner down the street. She offered one to Olivia with a shy, warm smile.

"How did it go?" Sophie asked softly.

Olivia took the hot cup, letting the warmth soak into her palms. She looked at Sophie—the young girl who had expected nothing, asked for nothing, yet had given her back her life.

"It’s over, Sophie," Olivia said, a small, genuine smile finally breaking across her face. "The monsters are going away."

She took a sip of the coffee, looking toward the exit doors where the late afternoon sun was shining brightly onto the pavement.

"Now... let's go rebuild my life."
