Chapter 2 - The Paper Empire

By 3:00 AM, the St. Regis ballroom was completely cleared out. The police had wrapped the wedding cake in hazard plastic as evidence, crime scene technicians had taken hundreds of photos, and the guests had been sent home under strict non-disclosure requests from the hotel’s legal team.
Olivia sat in the bridal suite, still wearing her gown, though she had stripped off the veil and thrown it into the fireplace hearth.
Sitting across from her was Ethan Vance—no relation to Chloe—the chief legal council for Olivia’s family company, Vance & Sterling Architecture. Alongside him sat Detective Marcus Reyes, the lead investigator assigned to the case.
And sitting quietly in an armchair near the corner, sipping a warm cup of tea, was Sophie. Olivia had personally requested that Sophie stay with her. In a room full of lawyers, cops, and frantic family members, Sophie was the only person in the building whose motives were entirely pure.
"We just finished reviewing the initial search warrants on Daniel's personal residence and Chloe's office," Detective Reyes said, laying a yellow notepad on the glass coffee table. "Miss Sterling, this wasn't a sudden crime of passion. This was a pre-meditated corporate takeover that has been in motion for over eighteen months."
Olivia closed her eyes, rubbing her temples. "Eighteen months... Daniel and I have only been engaged for eight."
"Because he proposed ahead of schedule to fast-track the timeline," Reyes explained. "According to digital evidence seized from Chloe’s cloud drive, Daniel and Chloe have been involved in an affair for nearly two years—starting right around the time Daniel’s hedge fund began suffering massive offshore losses."
Ethan, the lawyer, leaned forward. "Olivia, we pulled the pre-nuptial agreement you signed last week. The one Daniel’s attorneys insisted on adding a 'spousal emergency clause' to."
Olivia looked up, her brow furrowing. "The clause that said if either spouse became mentally or physically incapacitated, the other would take full control of their corporate voting shares?"
"Exactly," Ethan said grimly. "If you had eaten that cake tonight, you would have suffered severe neurological damage. Within forty-eight hours, Daniel would have declared you legally incompetent, assumed control of your forty-five percent stake in Sterling Architecture, and sold the firm’s proprietary blueprint patents to a Chinese conglomerate for sixty million dollars."
"And Chloe?" Olivia asked, her voice hollow.
"Chloe was scheduled to receive a ten-million-dollar wire transfer to a Swiss account the moment the merger closed," Reyes replied. "She was the one who supplied the scopolamine. She purchased it off the dark web using cryptocurrency linked to your firm's petty cash fund. She was literally using your money to buy the poison meant for you."
A heavy silence descended upon the room. The sheer scale of the sociopathic betrayal was breathtaking.
Sophie set her teacup down gently. "Miss Sterling?"
Olivia turned to look at the young server. "Please, Sophie. Call me Olivia."
"What about the catering company?" Sophie asked nervously. "My manager... Mr. Gable. When I tried to tell him what I saw before I ran into the ballroom, he tried to stop me. He told me to mind my own business or he’d fire me on the spot."
Detective Reyes’s eyes narrowed. "Gable? Arthur Gable?"
"Yes," Sophie nodded. "He was standing outside the kitchen door. He saw Daniel in the supply room earlier talking to Chloe, but when I showed him the photo, he grabbed my arm and tried to take my phone."
Reyes immediately made a note on his pad. "Gable has a history of wage theft and minor bribery. We’ll be serving a warrant on the catering firm by morning. If he took money to turn a blind eye, he’s an accessory to attempted murder."
Olivia stood up. The heavy satin of her dress rustled against the floor. She walked over to Sophie, kneeling beside the girl's armchair.
"Gable won't fire you, Sophie," Olivia said softly, taking the young girl's hands. "In fact, you’re never going back to that catering company again."
Sophie blinked. "Ma'am?"
"My firm employs over two hundred people," Olivia said, her eyes burning with a dark, newfound determination. "I need someone in my office who actually knows how to look at the truth when it’s standing right in front of them. Tomorrow morning, I want you at Sterling Architecture. You’re coming to work for me as my personal assistant."
Sophie’s jaw dropped. "Olivia... I don't know anything about architecture. I’m just a university student working night shifts to pay my tuition."
"You have character, Sophie," Olivia replied firmly. "I can hire a hundred Ivy League graduates who know how to draw blueprints. But I can't buy someone who has the courage to stop a room full of powerful people from committing a crime. You saved my life. Let me help you build yours."
Outside the hotel suite window, the first light of dawn was beginning to break over the Manhattan skyline. The long night of terror was ending, but as Olivia looked into the mirror at her smudged makeup and white dress, she knew the real fight was just beginning.
Daniel and Chloe had tried to steal her life, her business, and her sanity.
