Chapter 3 - The Shadow on the Wall

Three days later.

The high-rise headquarters of Sterling Architecture sat on the top four floors of a glass tower in Midtown. Usually, the glass doors opened to a bustling hive of creative energy, with young architects poring over digital blueprints and high-end clients sipping espresso in the lounge.

Today, the atmosphere inside was like a funeral home.

The news of the wedding disaster had exploded across every major media outlet in the country. Headlines like BRIDAL HORROR: GROOM AND MAID OF HONOR ARRESTED IN POISON PLOT were plastered across the front pages of the New York Post and The Wall Street Journal.

At 8:30 AM, the private elevator chimed.

The double doors slid open, and Olivia stepped out.

She was no longer wearing satin and lace. She wore a tailored charcoal-grey pantsuit, her dark hair pulled back into a sleek, razor-sharp ponytail. Beside her walked Sophie, dressed in a neat black blazer and trousers Olivia had bought for her the day before.

Every employee in the open-plan office stopped typing. Whispers rippled through the rows of desks.

"Good morning, everyone," Olivia announced, her voice ringing clear and authoritative across the floor. "I know you’ve all read the news. I know you have questions. But let me make one thing absolute clear: Sterling Architecture is open for business. Our operations will not cease, our projects will not delay, and the people who tried to destroy us are currently sitting in Rikers Island waiting for their bail hearing."

She turned toward Chloe’s former office—a corner space with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Central Park.

"Sophie," Olivia said calmly. "Call maintenance. Have Chloe’s name removed from that door immediately. Box up her personal items and send them to her defense attorney’s office. I want her presence erased from this building by noon."

"Yes, Olivia," Sophie replied, pulling out a notepad and writing down the order with crisp efficiency.

As Olivia stepped into her own executive suite, Ethan Vance was waiting for her, holding a thick red folder. His face was grim.

"We have a problem," Ethan said without preamble, closing the door behind them.

"Which one?" Olivia asked, sitting behind her massive oak desk. "The board of directors or the banks?"

"Both," Ethan replied, placing the red folder on her desk. "Daniel’s legal team filed an emergency injunction this morning. Even though he’s behind bars, his attorneys are arguing that his pre-nuptial proxy rights are still valid because the wedding ceremony was technically completed before the cake was cut."

Olivia’s eyes flashed with dangerous fire. "He thinks he can enforce a pre-nup from a jail cell?"

"He’s desperate, Olivia," Ethan explained. "His hedge fund went into official liquidation yesterday. He owes twenty-two million dollars to private creditors—some of whom are very dangerous people. If he doesn't get control of your firm's assets to liquidate them, those creditors are going to make sure he doesn't survive his time in prison."

Suddenly, the door to the suite clicked open, and Sophie walked in, holding an iPad. She looked pale.

"Olivia," Sophie said, her voice tight. "You need to see this. A live press conference just started outside the Manhattan Criminal Court."

Olivia grabbed the tablet. On the screen, a slick, silver-haired defense attorney named Julian Thorne was standing behind a bank of microphones. Beside him stood an elderly woman wearing a designer suit, wiping tears from her eyes with a lace handkerchief—Daniel’s mother, Victoria Cross.

"...My son is an innocent man who has been framed!" Thorne declared dramatically into the microphones. "This entire incident at the wedding was a manufactured stunt designed by Olivia Sterling to humiliate my client and breach their merger agreement! The photograph presented by a hotel server was doctored! There was no poison in that cake!"

Victoria Cross stepped up to the microphone, her voice trembling with theatrical grief. "Olivia Sterling is a mentally unstable woman who broke down under the stress of the wedding! She attacked my son, she ruined his reputation, and now she is trying to steal his legitimate business investments! We are filing a fifty-million-dollar defamation suit against her and Sterling Architecture today!"

Sophie gasped. "They're lying! I saw him! I saw him pour it!"

Olivia didn't flinch. She watched the press conference with a terrifying, calm composure.

"They're playing public relations," Olivia said coldly, setting the iPad back on the desk. "They know they can't win in a criminal court with Dr. Harper’s toxicology report, so they’re trying to destroy my firm’s stock value and force me into a settlement."

She looked up at Ethan. "Call a press conference for 2:00 PM in our lobby."

"Olivia, our PR team advises against public statements while the criminal case is pending—" Ethan began.

"I don't care what the PR team says," Olivia interrupted, leaning forward. "Daniel and his mother think they can spin the narrative because they assume I’m going to hide in my penthouse and cry. They think I’m weak."

She turned to Sophie. "Sophie, I need you to do something for me. Something that requires the same sharp eyes you used at the wedding."

"Anything," Sophie said without hesitation.

"When you were in that supply room," Olivia asked, her eyes narrowing, "did you see Daniel put the empty glass bottle back in his coat? Or did he drop it somewhere?"

Sophie’s eyes widened as the memory flashed back into her mind. "He didn't put it in his coat. He was startled when he heard a noise in the hallway... he shoved the bottle into an open crate of linen napkins near the ice machine!"

Olivia’s lips curled into a cold, lethal smile.

"Ethan," Olivia commanded, standing up. "Contact Detective Reyes. Tell him to get a crime scene unit back to the St. Regis immediately. Daniel’s legal team claims the photo was doctored..."

"...let's go give them his fingerprints."
