Chapter 7 - The Fall of the House of Sterling

The grand lobby of the Sterling-Vaughn Luxury Hotel was packed to capacity. Hundreds of reporters, camera crews, and curious citizens had gathered, forming a wall of human bodies that spilled out into the streets. The news of the midnight attack on the Montgomery estate had leaked, and the city was on the verge of a collective meltdown.

Upstairs in the penthouse boardroom, Victoria Sterling was frantically tossing documents into a heavy leather briefcase. Julian stood near the window, his face pale as he watched the sea of flashing police lights and media vans blocking the streets below.

"Mother, we have to go out the back service elevator," Julian whimpered, his hands shaking so violently he could barely hold his coat. "The FBI... they’re downstairs. The hotel manager said they’re closing the exits."

"Shut up, Julian!" Victoria screamed, her voice completely unhinged. Her hair was messy, her expensive pearl necklace missing. "We have the private jet waiting at the secondary airfield! Once we get to Switzerland, we can fight this! They can't prove anything!"

The heavy mahogany doors of the penthouse boardroom were suddenly blown off their hinges with a deafening boom.

A team of FBI tactical agents clad in full body armor poured into the room, their weapons raised. "Federal agents! Nobody move! Hands where we can see them!"

Behind the wall of federal agents stepped Maya, flanked by Colonel Vance and a dozen high-level legal advisors. Maya looked like an avenging angel, her grey eyes locking onto Victoria with a terrifying intensity.

"Going somewhere, Victoria?" Maya asked, her voice echoing clearly in the sudden silence of the room.

Victoria fell back against the large mahogany table, her eyes wide with animalistic fury. "You! You street rat! You ruined my life! You stole my empire!"

"You ruined your own life the moment you believed your wealth gave you the right to treat human beings like garbage," Maya said, stepping closer. She waved her hand, and an agent stepped forward, holding a pair of heavy iron handcuffs.

"Victoria Sterling, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit kidnapping, attempted murder, and felony financing of a domestic terrorist organization," the agent declared, grabbing Victoria’s wrists and snapping the cold steel cuffs into place.

"Julian! Help me!" Victoria shrieked, struggling against the agent's grip.

But Julian took three steps back, his hands raised in surrender. He looked at Maya, his eyes filled with a pathetic plea for mercy. "Maya... please, I had nothing to do with this! I didn't know she hired those men! I swear to God I didn't know! Please save me!"

Maya stopped in front of Julian. She looked at the man she had once loved, the man she had built a life with, and felt absolutely nothing. No anger. No sadness. Just profound, empty pity.

"You are a coward, Julian," Maya said softly. "You watched your mother abuse your wife, and you did nothing. You watched her try to steal your child's future, and you did nothing. You deserve exactly what’s coming to you."

The federal agents dragged Victoria out of the room. As they escorted her through the grand lobby of the hotel, hundreds of cameras flashed simultaneously. The live broadcast beamed her tear-stained, ruined face to hundreds of millions of screens around the world. The caption on the global news network read: “The Fall of the House of Sterling: Matriarch Arrested for Attack on Montgomery Heir.”

As Victoria was shoved into the back of a police cruiser, the crowd erupted into cheers. The system of arrogance and elitist cruelty had finally been shattered by the unyielding force of poetic justice.
