Chapter 3 - The Viral Storm

By six o’clock the next morning, the internet was on fire.
A high-definition video snippet, secretly recorded by one of the tech billionaires at the gala, had been uploaded to social media. The caption read: “The Rich Mother-in-Law Called Her a Worthless Orphan—Then One Forgotten Medal Silenced the Entire Banquet Hall.”
Within hours, the video had accumulated over fifty million views. The footage was breathtakingly dramatic: Victoria Sterling, radiating cruel authority, delivering a brutal slap to a young mother clutching a crying infant; the heavy metallic clang of the silver medal hitting the floor; and the terrifying entry of Colonel Marcus Vance, demanding the doors be locked as he revealed the girl's true identity.
The public reaction was a tidal wave of outrage. The hashtag #JusticeForMaya and #TheMontgomeryHeir trended number one worldwide. Activists, ordinary citizens, and global financial analysts alike were captivated by the sheer, unadulterated drama of the situation. The Sterling-Vaughn family, long despised for their predatory business practices and elitist arrogance, became the ultimate villains of the digital age.
Inside the secure sanctuary of Montgomery Manor, Maya sat in a sunlit breakfast room, watching the news reports on a massive screen. Lily was happily playing in a plush golden crib nearby, surrounded by the finest toys money could buy.
"The public sentiment is entirely in your favor, Lady Katherine," a young woman named Elena said, stepping into the room. Elena was a top-tier corporate strategist and public relations expert, personally selected by Colonel Vance to manage Maya's transition into power. "Sterling Holdings has lost 35% of its market value overnight. Their primary investors are pulling out in droves. But the true killing blow rests in your hands."
Elena placed a thick, leather-bound document on the table before Maya.
"This is the master logistics and shipping covenant for the eastern seaboard," Elena explained, a cold smile playing on her lips. "It is owned directly by the Montgomery Group. The Sterling-Vaughn family’s entire business model relies on this covenant to move their goods. It expires in forty-eight hours. Victoria Sterling has been desperately trying to renew it for the past six months. If you refuse to sign the renewal, their supply lines freeze instantly. They will be bankrupt within a month."
Maya looked at the document. Her finger traced the signature line, where her new legal name—Katherine Montgomery—was printed in elegant gold script.
For years, she had been forced to beg for basic human decency. She remembered the time Victoria had forced her to wait outside in the rain for three hours because she had forgotten to wipe her shoes before entering the Sterling mansion. She remembered the quiet, mocking laughs of Julian's friends when she didn't know which fork to use at a formal dinner. She remembered the crushing realization that her husband would never, ever stand up for her.
"Where is Julian right now?" Maya asked softly.
"He has been calling our security gate every ten minutes since dawn," Vance said, walking into the room with a fresh set of security reports. "He’s currently sitting in his sports car outside the primary checkpoint, begging the guards to let him through. He claims he has a message from his mother. Shall I have the guards remove him permanently?"
Maya stayed silent for a moment, her grey eyes flashing with a cold, analytical brilliance that would have terrified Victoria.
"No," Maya said, a slow, decisive smile spreading across her face. "Let him in. But he doesn't come to the house. Bring him to the corporate headquarters tomorrow morning. Tell him that if he wants to save his family's empire, he must bring his mother. They will face me in the boardroom."
Vance nodded, his eyes gleaming with pride. "As you wish, Lady Katherine. The trap is set."
Meanwhile, at the Sterling estate, the atmosphere was chaotic. Victoria was throwing crystal vases against the wall, her face twisted in rage. The mansion was surrounded by paparazzi and angry protestors holding signs demanding her arrest for assault.
"Mother, you have to come with me tomorrow," Julian pleaded, his voice cracking with desperation. He looked disheveled, his expensive suit wrinkled, his hair messy. "Maya's lawyers called. She’s controlling the Montgomery covenant. If she doesn't sign it, we lose everything. The banks are already threatening to foreclose on this house!"
"I will not bow to that street rat!" Victoria screamed, her voice hoarse. "She is a nobody! I am Victoria Sterling!"

"Mother, she isn't a nobody!" Julian yelled back, his fear finally overriding his subservience. "She is a Montgomery! She owns the very ground we are standing on! If you don't apologize to her, she will destroy us!"
Victoria froze, her breath rattling in her chest. For the first time, the brutal reality of her situation began to sink in. The orphan she had despised, the girl she had struck in public, now held the power of life and death over her life's work.
