Chapter 5 - The Snake's Last Bite

Though defeated in the boardroom, Victoria Sterling was not a woman to go quietly into the night. The impending public trial and the loss of her empire had driven her to a state of clinical madness. She holed herself up in a private penthouse apartment, refusing to speak to the media or her legal team. Her mind was entirely consumed by a singular, burning desire: to destroy the girl who had brought her to her knees.

"If I am going down, I will take her legacy with me," Victoria hissed to herself, staring at a burner phone on her desk.

She dialed a number that belonged to a dark, illicit corner of her past—a criminal syndicate leader named Victor Vance (no relation to the Colonel), who specialized in corporate sabotage, kidnapping, and high-stakes extortion.

"Victor," Victoria said, her voice dropping into a ragged whisper. "I have a job for you. The Montgomery heir. She thinks she is untouchable now. I want her broken. I want her to lose the one thing she values more than her newfound wealth."

On the other end of the line, the criminal mastermind smiled in the dark. "You are asking for a hit on a Montgomery, Victoria. That carries a massive premium. The security surrounding her is elite."

"I don't care about the cost!" Victoria shouted, her eyes bloodshot. "I will transfer my remaining overseas assets to your accounts tonight. Just do it. Kidnap the child. Destroy the mother’s sanity."

Meanwhile, unaware of the gathering storm, Maya was beginning to settle into her new life. She spent her days learning the intricacies of the Montgomery empire under the guidance of Colonel Vance. She proved to be a natural leader—her years of surviving adversity had given her a sharp instincts, deep empathy for the lower-level employees, and a resilience that could not be taught in Ivy League business schools.

She also launched the Montgomery Foundation for Displaced Children, investing five hundred million dollars into building state-of-the-art group homes, educational facilities, and legal defense funds for orphans across the country. The public loved her. She was no longer just a wealthy heiress; she was a symbol of hope, a real-life Cinderella who was using her power to heal the world.

One evening, Maya was sitting in the grand library of the manor, rocking Lily to sleep. The room was warm, filled with the comforting scent of old books and wood smoke.

Suddenly, the lights throughout the estate flickered and died, plunging the manor into darkness.

An eerie silence fell over the house. A second later, the heavy thud of flashbang grenades detonating near the perimeter gates echoed through the night. The security alarms blared, their red lights flashing against the walls.

"Lady Katherine!" Colonel Vance’s voice cut through the darkness as he burst into the library, a tactical rifle in his hands. His expression was grim. "We are under attack. A highly coordinated mercenary team has breached our primary security grid. They’ve jammed our communications lines. We need to get you to the panic room immediately!"

Maya’s heart hammered in her chest, but she didn't panic. The timid girl who used to cower from Victoria’s insults was gone. She stood up, holding Lily tightly against her chest, her grey eyes flashing with determination.

"Where are they coming from, Colonel?" Maya asked, her voice steady.

"They breached the southern terrace," Vance said, ushering her down a hidden corridor behind a bookshelf. "They aren't here to rob us, Maya. They are moving with military precision. They are here for you and the baby."

As they hurried down the stone steps toward the underground bunker, a heavy explosion shook the foundations of the house. Dust and plaster rained down from the ceiling. From the shadows of the upper hallway, three armed men dressed in black tactical gear emerged, their weapons raised.

"Freeze!" one of the mercenaries shouted. "Drop the kid and step away!"

Vance instantly raised his weapon, firing two precise shots that brought the first two men down. But the third mercenary lunged forward, tackling the aging Colonel to the floor. The rifle clattered out of Vance's hands, sliding across the stone floor.

The mercenary stood up, his mask obscuring his face, and drew a combat knife. He turned his gaze toward Maya, who was backed against the wall, her body shielding Lily.

"Nothing personal, Lady Montgomery," the man sneered, stepping closer. "Just business. Victoria Sterling sends her regards."
